The only thing I know thats junk on all wrx's are the 5 speeds meaning that 2nd gear on all 5 speed turbos will always break. Found this out by Service Manager at one of my local Subaru dealer ships. He said that they fixed the problem in 2011.
As for the engines as long as you dont put to much boost on them they hold up good. So far I have 98,000 miles on the same engine with mild mods on it.
Im pushing 265bhp right now on stock turbo and internals.
In my opinion they are not junk just have problems like all cars and trucks on the road just some more than other.

Codes are not inherently problems. What they are, is a symptom of a bad tuner. Modifications cause abnormality, for good or bad, but a skilled tuner will remove the codes to keep the dash clean.
As for "junk transmissions" we have an old one that's handling over 300BHP on Rusti (V3STi). It's holding up fine. Drive less like a maniac and don't get a "stage 3 clutch" - it's an intentional weak point to save expensive parts from bad drivers. And if a $300 clutch is an expensive repair, you're not going to have a good time in performance cars.
