At a Game Industry presentation I did I actually touched on this kind of ignorance. If I was to do an environment or an illustration which had a 1940's theme with art-deco style architecture to it, people like you would immediately say "oh wow that looks like BioShock!" as if you are under the impression bioshock invented that style of art. Your just happy with somethings face value and never bother to ask where things came from. Miyazaki just has a fondness for old Western European architecture which I'm sad to inform you stems from art culture and architectural history rather than an anime you love fawning over!
Forgive if I sound rude but I only said it reminded me of of a movie I never said it was in that style art.
You already know that Bioshock was a hit game using 50's style of future technology and using music from the 50's plus the violence and brutality it was a memorable game and of course someone who played the game or is a fan of would say, "Look a Bioshock pic!" Even I love the style and graphics of this game even though I never played it.
As for Miyazaki's work just like the game the movie was good yes i'm love this anime but when I see a piece of art that one worked hard on I don't just think of anime or game and say, "Ooooh it's just like Final Fantasy!" no I simply reconize the artist for their hard work.

But you DID say "Oooooh reminds of a anime move called, "Howl's Moving Castle." and that was it. All you did was say it reminded you of something else and nothing more! You just replied to me that "you don't do that, (even though you DID) you simply recognize the artist for their hard work (which you completely DIDN'T!)
you just did something you told me you don't do, and you failed to do something you say you always do.
I would have LOVED to see you in a debate class.

you confused me abit but I think I understand where your going the thing is I do reconize Redics work but doesn't mean I have to leave a comment saying I reconize his art.
This piece does remind of alot of things but more closley to movie your comment that replied to mine, "If I was to do an environment or an illustration which had a 1940's theme with art-deco style architecture to it, people like you would immediately say "oh wow that looks like BioShock!" as if you are under the impression bioshock invented that style of art. I never said it was create from the movie I said it reminded me which something differant being reminded of something is rembering something of the past to a point where you eventually remember the most of it details.
and that's why this art reminded of a movie becouse of the detail that was so carefully done.

I guess your right I may not the style of the architecure but I do know the carefull detailed work.
your comments gave me alot to think about...
and truthfully i'm am annoyed but I have to thank you just being reminded of detail isn't enough but background of the piece and where the style came from or atleast that's what it was.

well, pardon me if i happen to like anime and do not feel obliged to spout self righteous trivia or have the patience to study volumes and volumes of text for the simple fact that i feel the need to fill my head with so much useless information that it absorbs the entirety of my psyche. kindly keep these kinds of comments to yourself, for i do not think many other people here would care to suffer your arrogance so easily.
If I am willing to deal with your ignorance, you should be prepared to deal with my arrogance. This is where we are by your statement. My arrogance versus your ignorance, simple as that.
You like anime, thats alright with me but I feel you should learn the origins of the stories and art styles which come with it. You like "Howl's Moving Castle" thats a fantastic movie which I enjoy immensely as well. If you like it so much why didn't you look into the origins of the styles they used for many elements of the movie?
I didn't study volumes of trivial knowledge, I simply researched the origins of certain aspects I really enjoyed from a movie or a piece of art. I feel everyone should do this because its fun, easy, and it makes you knowledgeable to a point where you can start putting people in their place when they fail to truly appreciate something like you can.

You would be amazed at what you could do if you just spent more than 5 hours on something, even if it was your first time doing it. It's a revolutionary idea for people like you these days to think of spending such time on a single thing when your so used to immediate gratification with minimal efforts put into it.
When was the last time you put 50 hours into the creation of a single thing?
Your appreciation means nothing because you truly do not understand the idea of "suffering for your art".
When was the last time you put 50 hours into the creation of a single thing?

and it appears to be a revolutionary idea for people like you to think about whether or not someone actually has the time to devote to things like this, and you would be amazed, no, absolutely astounded at the fact that other people might not have as low ambition as you think, nor even be what they appear.
Most of that isn't even a direct reply to what I told you, but I'll work with what you gave me.
People have ALL SORTS of time on their hands which is usually spent on completely non productive activities. EVERYONE, myself included, is guilty of wasting time which could have been spent on some method of beneficial creativity. Most people have all the time in the world and choose to never take full advantage of it. Don't you tell me people don't have the time to dedicate to something like this because they DO, they just never make use of it.
I have come to expect a certain amount of ambition from the average person. I am unfortunately still disappointed when I see people sinking below that already menial level of expected effort. People surprise me still with how lazy they are and it just goes so well with what I already stated above.
"It's a revolutionary idea for people like you these days to think of spending such time on a single thing when your so used to immediate gratification with minimal efforts put into it."
Your written style suggests you fall into the above category of people who are just generally unimpressive in the artistic sense to ever accomplish anything notable by any means with your art.

well, for your information, i do happen to be quite gifted in music, but i have not the equip, ent to put my art out there, nor do i feel comfortable posting much of my art to sites like this for dealing with people like you. i never hope to accomplish anything with my art, because of the simple fact that if i make it my job, my hobby will simply become work.
Interesting. The casual knave around here would just look at this and go (OH WOW, that totally looks awesome but I'm too uncultured on the subject of artwork outside of the furry community to leave a good comment!) I however look at this and am entranced in deep thoughts of appreciation and scrutiny. I don't know if the perspective is totally accurate, but I don't doubt that it might be. The perspective is spot on enough to where nothing looks eschew or suspicious. The architecture itself looks like you had a great deal of fun with it, and that's an important element to have in quality artwork.
The architectural styles involved in the piece, to the casual observer, may appear to resemble Western European influence. I'm noticing some peppered speckles of Middle Eastern styles mixed in as well, but like 95 percent West European.
Its a very nice blend of serious efforts mixed with humorous presentation which make for a very enjoyable delivery I deeply appreciate as an artist with high-standards while at the same time I can laugh at and enjoy it with my good humor.
A fantastic piece exhibiting an array of different artistic skills and thought process. This is also a piece which can be enjoyed several different ways by viewers of different tastes.
On a separate note:
You've gotten some replies on this where I feel either your too nice and accepting of peoples ignorance or you just don't care about it BUT, I as an observer have been offended by their inability to appreciate something they are commenting on.
I'll also reply to them individually for their own benefit but I'd also like you to observe how I deal with the artistically unappreciative and culturally ignorant people who might consider themselves artists to a degree.
(dude, you must have the patience of a saint to go into that much detail...)

(Looks like something Miyazaki would do. :3)

Once again, the same as the above comment. Maybe because Miyazaki has a fondness for old Western European architecture! Who knows, maybe some day you'll do something with something like this which will affect a large number of people and then someone like me will be defending this style of architecture because someone thought YOU invented it. Heh heh, an artist can only hope something like that happens.

I'm only expressing to them my disappointment of their comments. As a viewer of an image, I have certain standards for myself when I leave a comment. I tend to only leave comments on things which genuinely impress the hell out of me and when something manages to surpass even my own standards I feel it deserves genuine praise to truly let the artist realize their accomplishment. I understand how people are generally satisfied with leaving non-nonsensical and painfully shallow comments all over everything and I have no problem with this.
It terribly disappoints me however when something as good as this which isn't riddled with penis' or glazed with semen gets those very same people pathetically trying to appreciate it in the only manner they know, by telling the artist it just reminds them of some other artist. They don't really even comment on the piece itself, just that it looks like something else they have seen. I understand most people looking at this think the same way but these were the people who were motivated enough to leave a comment on it and voice their uncultured thoughts.
I am disappointed in these people mostly because they have no idea how to truly appreciate something like this. They comment on it for all the wrong reasons. The things they say do nothing to affect the artist and do little to nothing to acknowledge the work itself or the efforts put into it. They are not artists to the extent some of us are thus if they feel a need to make a shallow comment on a deep and intricate piece of work, they should expect some coaching of appreciative etiquette from someone like myself who truly understands the work behind the piece.
It's the people who are unfamiliar with the professional discipline and standards of art who do not, nor could they ever, truly understand.

and who exactly are you to determine what the wrong reasons are for commenting on an image are? people have their own thoughts, and their own ways of expressing said thoughts. and there is one major flaw there. for most people, this is a CASUAL art site. non professional. they create art because they ENJOY it, they ENJOY making something beautiful. if someone can relate an image to something else that generally impresses them, who are to tell them to take their comments elsewhere? you are no better or worse than the rest of us at best, and at worst you are a garden variety SPECK of an internet troll, simply trying to initiate a dick-measuring competition.
i don't spend time researching cultural aspects of art because i simply ENJOY viewing art, something you can't seem to comprehend. i'm quite interested in gazing at fractal or abstract art, and also enjoy listening to many different kinds of music. i enjoy well written stories now and then, but i don't bother researching every influential aspect of the world the artist portrays. i prefer the magic of the mystery, for the moment you can explain something and list every single key aspect of it and their purpose in the grand scheme of the work, it simply loses the luster it once had. to put it bluntly for you, it becomes BORING.
and if you so want others who appreciate art and understand it as you do, go to Paris, get a job at the Louvre as a tour guide, and kindly stay there. i think your "talents" would be better appreciated there.

I'm not saying their reasons for commenting were wrong, it was their choice and they are free to express themselves. I was merely voicing my disappointment for their evident lack of quality to the comment. If they choose to take it personally that is once again, their choice. I do respect people's thoughts and I will not hinder them in their expressions, but I can reply to them with my disappointment which is in no way a manner of inhibition to the person its directed towards. If my disappointment inhibits a person, well its their problem they need to get over.
I never told anyone to take their comments elsewhere. Not once did I ever suggest someone NOT comment. I expressed an idea that if they were going to comment, they should be able to add more depth and knowledge to it. And this troll term you people like to throw around is just a name you give people who add a ripple of hard reality to the pristine pond of your fantasy furry world of convenience.
(((i don't spend time researching cultural aspects of art because i simply ENJOY viewing art, something you can't seem to comprehend.)))
I do comprehend it very easily, I just don't respect it. You have all the freedom in the world to enjoy anything you want, but WHY do you enjoy it? You mentioned it yourself. "You don't have to have a reason to like it, you just like it because you do." "WHY", is the most important question in the world. Everything has a reason behind it, but people like yourself are just too easily satisfied to bother to ask why. You like art, WHY do you like art? You don't care, your happy with it and just too damn lazy to bother to care about your appreciation for it. "The magic of mystery" as you call it is nothing more than the laziness of ignorance.
(((to put it bluntly for you, it becomes BORING.)))
That's it! You hit it right on the nose. Its not a matter of boring alone, its also a matter of standards and expectations. Through my discipline my standards have been raised quite high which is why I don't even bother commenting on most art because I just don't like it. I only leave comments on works which impress me, such as this one. This work takes into consideration all the standards I have come to appreciate. I get agitated when I see people like you, who are blind to those standards because your too easily impressed with the mundane, comment on this and flaunt about your ignorance and lack of true appreciation for it.
(((and if you so want others who appreciate art and understand it as you do, go to Paris)))
Ahhh, that would be the life wouldn't it. France, where everyone appreciates the artist. Sadly I choose to remain here and hope to inspire others to new levels of artistic appreciation. You may say "well you don't have to be such an asshole about it" but I do! Being an asshole about it is all I know because it was all I was taught! I was cultured in the arts by a bunch of superior art assholes who put me through what many would see as vindictive hell. I endured their methods and learned to enjoy and appreciate it. There are other methods which are more understanding of slower developers such as yourself but this is my method. This method has been working great as a filtering tool. It will either teach those who are willing to suffer for their art and become a great artist or stagger and shoot down those who truly do not have what it takes to poses such knowledge.
you are one of the staggering slow pokes whom the knowledge does not have patience for.

be that as it may, i am learning, only at my own pace. i'll just keep it as my hobby, i don't expect nor strive to get better as an artist, but if i do, hooray for me. you go at your pace, and i will go at mine. i'll enjoy art my own way, as you will yours. who knows, maybe someday i'll be better as an artist here, but i really prefer music to drawing.
I could swear I'd commented on this ages ago. Regardless, I can't think of much to say beyond 'stunning'. I can just spend ages exploring this piece. It's wonderful. It's the sort of thing I'd try to get in poster form for a kid's wall so they have something to look at while their brain wanders about.
Yes, it takes a village - to go ON A RAMPAGE THIS SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY AT THE METRO-DOME!
See the Hamlet of Hammertoe go steeple-to-steeple with Frankfurt-am-Main! It's going to be total CARNAGE - er, HOUSAGE!
Adults only five dollars - kids get in FREEEEEEEEE!
...don't know why, the image just wouldn't leave my mind...

Sir, you have astonished me with your grasp of perspective. These aren't simple lines drawn to a vanishing point, but carefully aligned pieces, perhaps like a puzzle. The structure is'nt straight at all but the houses and windows are all slightly slaint (I hope that is the correct word). This would surely be a perspective nightmare for me.
I must applaud you on a job well done. The time you spend on it is well worth this fine piece of art.
The only thing I don't like are the thick outlines, but to each their own, right?

There's a quartet of scifi/steampunk/post apocalyptic novels by author Philip Reeve about entire towns and cities mounting themselves on wheels or treads and trundling across the wastelands, hunting one another for resources, with big cities like London literally devouring smaller towns and villages. In England the books are known as the "Mortal Engines" series, whereas in America they're known as the "Predator Cities" novels.
This piece reminds me of that. Very well done.
