Finnick's not a large guy.
But in my headcanon, I think Finn saved an inexperienced twelve year old Nick from receiving a pummeling for a clumsy con he tried to run when he was just getting started.
Nick wasn't quite apt enough to pull it off, and some larger creatures figured out he was trying to pull a fast one on them. And they weren't the types to hesitate to pound a kid. They also thought the little fennec trying to interfere sure was funny... Until Finn DID interfere. Then it wasn't that funny anymore.
And I think Finn just sort of took Nick under his wing from then on. (Which paid off, as Nick got a lot savvier quite fast.)
