Rex left the shower room feeling clean and revitalized. His fur was almost dry after the thorough washing Gaaren gave him, and now Rex was awaiting a relaxing and calm evening with his friend. The wolf stepped into Gaaren's bedroom, which was without windows and lit by a few yellow candles only, placed around the square, and small room. The bedrooms in the Helm-Rhun military buildings and bases were all very basic- small, and minimalistic, only existing to keep a beds for the residents, and Gaaren's room was no exception. In fact, the bedroom's ceiling was only a few inches higher than the eight foot golden dragon, and the door frames were low enough that Gaaren had to duck when passing through them... But then again, he had to to the same for doors almost everywhere.
Gaaren had left the shower room an hour earlier, while Rex had stayed and turned on the steam to enjoy some much needed relaxation time. His deployment to the desert had left him feeling tired and overstretched, even though most of his days there were slow and without much work to do. The brown wolf yawned and stretched, then grabbed a towel hanging on a rack on the wall, and dried his damp, but warm fur. He slipped his black combat shorts back on, but left his weapon, and his amulet necklace, on the bed where he had taken them off. Rex walked into the main room of Gaaren's quarters, and found the warrior dragon casually relaxing on his sofa, completely bare of clothing. The same book he had been reading earlier in the day, 'The account of Vylmaar the flameless', was in his hands.
"Hey, buddy." The wolf greeted.
"Hm." the dragon replied simply, still looking at the words of his book.
Rex sat down next to the dragon, and rested his footpaws on the coffee table.
"So what's that book you're reading, Gaar?" He asked. "You look... bored."
Gaaren exhaled through his nose. "See for yourself", he said, handing the book to Rex.
The wolf took it and looked at the cover, reading the title, then the notice on the front of the worn leather cover. "Confidential royal document. DO NOT READ WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION."
"Uhhh, Gaaren, are you sure I should be reading this?" Rex asked, unsure. "It says..."
"Who's going to see you?" The dragon said, casually. "...It's a secret document, Rex. It's old, and known only to the elite inner circle of Drakespire. So... Keep your maw shut about me letting you see it."
Rex smiled nervously and chuckled.
"Well... Sure, I could take a look. What's so important about it?" the wolf asked, opening the cover.
"It's the record of a rogue priest who lived a few hundred years back, Vylmaar. He's the only dragon who managed to make it to the afterlife... and return. Just... flip through until you get to page 309, that's where it gets... interesting", Gaaren said, getting up off the sofa and walking to the small kitchen area in the other corner of the room.
"Okay... So Gaar, where are those little friends of yours? I didn't see them around when I arrived." Rex said, opening the book to page 1. The wolf looked at the page, reading a few random lines.
"Right, those two... I should introduce you properly. They're on the coffee table, somewhere", Gaaren grumbled, and took a pear out of the fruit bowl in his kitchen, bringing it into his mouth and swallowing it after a single, big *crunch*.
"Oh?" Rex replied, looking at the table he was resting his feet on. And like Gaaren had said, the two tiny creatures were there- standing several inches from one of Rex's footpaws.
"...huh... that's them", the brown wolf said, putting the book down then taking his feet of the table, and leaning forward to get a closer look at them.
Gaaren poured himself a generous helping of mixed berry ale and a smaller helping for Rex, then returned to the sofa where he sat with the brown wolf. On the coffee table, he put down the glasses and reached a hand toward the shrunken wolf and dragon. His big, golden hand grabbed them both up together.
"Hold out your paws", Gaaren said.
Rex did so, opening his paws and making a platform. The gold dragon released the two tiny creatures, who fell gently into the brown wolf's paws.
"The dragon is Scale. And the wolf, he's Lyle." Gaaren said. "He's... a nightwolf, actually."
Rex looked over the pair with more than casual interest and some confusion.
"Really?" He asked, turning his eyes to Gaaren, then back to the small ones. "So, a nightwolf? You're from the far east?" Rex asked.
Lyle's reply was quiet, but still easily heard by the larger wolf.
"Uh huh... yeah. And you're Rex... Woah. Gaar said you were somethin', but... woah, you're sure nice to look at.", the tiny wolf said, casually smiling up to the larger, brown-furred wolf.
Rex felt himself blush a little under his fur, but managed to mostly keep his cool. Rex briefly looked away, doing his best to hide an accidental smile.
"Uhm... yeah, thanks..." he answered.
Then, the brown wolf heard another voice coming from his paws.
"It's great to meet you, Rex..." Scale said. "Ah... we're sorry if we caused any trouble for you earlier..."
Rex met eyes with the miniature dragon and gave him a curious smile. "Well, I don't think you did, really... Thanks to Gaaren speaking for you, anyway. It's no trouble." He replied. "Just be glad you didn't end up as gator food."
Lyle chuckled and scratched his ear. "Don't be so sure about that, big guy." He told the larger wolf. "My friend here? He could have turned things around in a second..." Lyle said, placing an arm around Scale's neck. "But, you know, we were in a good mood."
"Uhm... What do you mean?" Rex asked.
Gaaren lay back, relaxing against the large back pillow of the sofa, and folded his arms.
"Scale isn't an ordinary dragon, Rex. His kind aren't suited to fighting. They use magic arts instead of weapons or claws... and in Scale's case, his speciality is size alteration."
"Shrinking magic? ...okay. That would explain the two-inch nightwolf..." Rex commented.
"Shrinking, growing, the works." Lyle spoke up, "And yeah, that would explain yours truly. As for Scale, well, his species are naturally this size, so really, I'm the only shrunken one you're holding."
Rex turned his gaze back to the little gray lizard. "Is that so?..."
"Oh, y-yeah", Scale replied, smiling. "Th-this is me. But, um, usually I keep myself at a more normal height. The world is a lot safer that way, hah... Um, would you... like a demonstration?"
Rex's ears perked a little. "That would be... something to see, sure...", the brown wolf said, with curiousity.
"Yeah... well, just put me down and I'll get right on it", the tiny dragon answered.
"Sure", Rex said, carefully tilting his right paw, allowing Lyle a moment to step into the brown wolf's left palm with Scale, before gently taking hold of the dragon's midsection and lifting him up. Rex brought Scale from his palm onto the sofa, placing him in the unoccupied space between himself and Gaaren.
"Thanks", Scale said. "Now, watch this."
The miniature dragon's staff began to glow, and Rex instantly began to notice his tiny form increasing in size. In the span of three seconds the dragon had grown from a little over two inches in height to around five, and still growing. Scale's increase in size accelerated steadily and now, moments after the growth began, he was pushing two feet. Rex watched as the dragon's height continued to increase- three feet, four feet, five...
As Scale closed in on the five foot, nine inches mark, his growing abruptly slowed to a halt, leaving the now normal-size dragon sitting between the taller Rex and the much larger, gold dragon. Rex took a few seconds to simply look at Scale, taking in his new height. The dragon was obviously not built for strength, but didn't really look too weak, either. His scales were smooth, like Gaaren's, but lacked the bigger dragon's striking color, being a dull gray, besides a lighter gray tone spreading from his neck, down his torso and belly, then ending at the tip of his tail. One other thing Rex had not been able to see previously thanks to Scale's small size, was some kind of mark on his shoulder- it was the same symbol, in fact, that was visible on the cloth he wore, the only piece of clothing on the dragon's body. The dust-colored, washed-out two tone cloth consisted of two individual strips of fabric, which were joined by thin strips of an unknown fabric which hugged the dragon's hips firmly.
"Well... I'm ...definately not used to seeing magic like that", the brown wolf said, bringing a small smile to the gray dragon's face.
"Of course... not many people are. And, y'know, this staff is one of a kind..." Scale said.
"That's right", Gaaren added, placing his huge hand on Scale's shoulder. "Scale and his talents come in useful... Sometimes", he said. "Now, back to your correct size", he told the smaller dragon.
"O-oh, okay..." Scale submitted, with a shy, quiet laugh.
Immediately, Scale's staff lit up, reducing itself and its owner to their previous sizes in half the time it had taken them to grow. Again, Rex watched with interest.
When Scale stopped shrinking, Gaaren's hand descended and firmly picked him up, nabbing the dragon by his tail. The tiny lizard was lifted up, and let down into Gaar's other hand, his small, slender gray form being in stark contrast to the massive palm's golden scales.
"So, Rex, as you can see, this one is a very useful little dragon..." Gaaren said, moving a fingertip onto Scale's head, giving him two gentle pets. "But..." he continued, casually grabbing the tip of Scale's magic staff, and freeing it from the smaller dragon's hand before he could react, "take his staff away..." he went on, placing the tiny stick onto the coffee table far out of its owner's reach, "and he's totally helpless."
Rex watched on as Gaaren brought his free hand back to Scale, and grabbed the miniature dragon, again by the tip of his tail, and lifted him off the surface of the golden palm he was standing on.
Without any more words, Gaaren brought Scale up to his face, and the golden dragon's mouth opened up a few degrees. The tiny dragon wasn't squirming in protest, Rex noticed. What was Gaaren doing?
The huge, golden dragon's mouth opened a little wider, and without much wait he brought Scale to his lips, and extended his tongue to catch the smaller dragon as he let go of his tail.
With a quiet "ah..." the gray micro-lizard was taken into Gaaren's maw, and sealed in warm, damp darkness as the warrior dragon's jaws shut, with a muffled *tap* sounding from inside as his rows of teeth closed together.
"Ahh... Gaar..." Rex said, bewildered.
Was Gaaren... eating him? It couldn't be... could it? Scale was trapped in the gold dragon's maw like a snack, and Gaaren was in a position to consume him at his leisure... at any moment, he could swallow the gray dragon and send him on a one way journey to his stomach. Rex looked on while Gaaren's jaw moved slightly as he used his tongue to brush across Scale's tiny form, tasting him.
"Don't worry, he's fine in there", Lyle said, getting the brown wolf's attention.
"Hm..." Gaaren said, rolling Scale under his tongue. "That's right. I'm not planning on swallowing him any time soon..." the dragon continued. "Although... it is tempting."
The warrior dragon swept Scale back onto the top of his tongue, and took a taste of him once more, easily subduing the tiny dragon's struggles.
"Uhm..." was all Rex could come up with. He looked at the small, black wolf in his palm, then back to Gaaren. The wolf blushed, becoming aware of the naked dragon's arousal and turned his eyes to Gaaren's maw. The gold dragon once again moved Scale across his tongue, and exhaled deeply through his nose, sucking on the tiny dragon briefly.
After a minute, Gaaren nudged Scale to the front of his mouth, and allowed the smaller dragon's tail to pass between his lips, then softly grabbed onto it. He pulled the snack-size Scale out of his maw, and placed him on the table next to his size-altering staff.
Rex watched the tiny lizard stand up; he did so looking a little dizzy, and picked up his staff. Gaaren's hand moved away from Scale and picked up his glass of ale, which was itself several times taller than the miniature dragon. The gold dragon rose from his seat and walked to the window, looking out while he drank down some of his ale.
Rex leaned in close to the tiny Scale, and spoke softly, "You okay?".
Scale smiled up and replied, "Yeah... Like Gaaren said, he had no plans of eating me. Hopefully he won't change his mind in the future. Hahh..." The dragon said, smiling nervously. "Uh...huh" Rex replied, placing Lyle on the table next to the gray lizard.
"So Rex," Gaaren began, "Do you have anywhere to be tonight?"
The brown wolf thought on it for a moment. "Um, no, I'm free until tomorrow morning."
"Right..." the dragon answered. "What about that roommate of yours? Will he notice if you're not back until tomorrow?" He then asked, before drinking the rest of his glass, putting the empty container on the window shelf.
"Actually, he's still deployed, for the next week. Why?" Rex inquired, scratching his chest.
"Hm. Because, there's room in my bed for one more. Do you want to stick around?" The warrior dragon asked.
"I'd like that, Gaar..." Rex replied, with a smile, as he picked up the secretive book from the coffee table and flipped to page 309 as the warrior dragon had suggested.
