Oil oxen are are herbivores found primarily in deserts and dry plains. Their fur absorbs energy from the sun, which maintains their constant stomach fire at 500°F. The steam created from the special coal that they eat travels up and out of the horns, forcing a hard, crust like substance that grows in the horns to soften and drip out of them. This new “mucus” is extremely flammable and often used in place of oil, thus the name Oil Oxen. Travelers often use them as a heat and light source at night, and smoke signals when stranded or lost
