The badge blank art I submitted for FC'09.
The theme: SURF SAFARI
Tribal ferrets roast the FC09 "mascot", an African Wild Dog in surf shorts.
I've done badges for every FC except 99 and 03. The registration staff received thirteen unique artists and could only print twelve badge blanks (2 master sheets at 6 per sheet) for attendees to select. They asked if I wouldn't mind sitting this year out, as I also did badge art for the Patron/Sponsor badges and the Dealers room assistant badges.
I was a bit bummed, but I figured I'd be a good sport to let everyone else have the spotlight, and they repurposed the art for the con book - on the Message from the Chairman page.
I had a friend print up some bootleg badges but didn't realize they were in my possession until Saturday evening, way too late for me to cut up and give to friends. I'd pondered gathering addresses and sending them out to people but that'd likely be a lot of work!

I was very upset to see you didn't have your badge art there.
To be honest, the rest of the options were not to my liking, so I selected something I ended up not enjoying very much.
In years past, your badge art always seems to be the most popular and picked up the quickest.
It seems odd that they would choose something that is new over something that is well known and enjoyed.
I get the concept of giving others a chance, but perhaps they should keep what is popular and fill in from there.
I am sure others were looking through the piles of badge art for yours with the same disappointment I had.

I've often leaned toward fairness and giving people a chance, rather than expecting people to bow before my art. It's odd they used to say how quickly they ran out of my badges. I would ask them why wouldn't they just print more of mine, but that would seem unfair to other artists.
