I got my order from blapticadubia.com today, 100 nymphs and 4 pairs of adults. I made them a little condo in a 10 gal. Bottom dish is food, top is water crystals (though they were still soaking when I took the photo so they're not there). Top photo is a closeup of a few that were hanging out on the second "level". Second photo just me lifting up the top level to pester them with the camera, bottom photo is a shot of the bowls (which technically they can climb in and out of, I just made it a bit easier plus it looks hilarious).
I had a colony a couple years ago, but when I moved I fed them all off to my dragons since I wasn't sure about keeping them here. But I felt like it so I blew some money on setting 'em up again.
Breed my pretties, breed >:D bwahahaha

I googled them to see what they looked like and came up with your LJ http://lilliosa.livejournal.com/27303.html XD
Are you saying it would be a bad idea for me to go outside and turn over some dead tree trunk and collect the winged "OMFG ITS FLYING RIGHT AT ME KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT!" type of roaches here in southern texas to be kept in a similar enclosure as you have in these photos?
I have been pondering what to do with my gerbils 10 gallon set up when he FINALLY dies... he is 4 years old, the pet store and interwebs say MAXIMUM 3 years in captivity... LIES I TELL YOU! LIES
maybe a rat would be a better idea... at least he would get less "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!" reactions if i decide to take him/her into town with me riding on my shoulder.

I think if you were only keeping like 2 or so that it wouldn't be a big deal. I was talking more about keeping them to breed/use as feeders. They breed prolifically enough in the wild they don't need any help. 8D I think if you caught one and IDed it on the 'net you could find out more if they spray any kind of defensive fluids or otherwise smell. I have to clean my tank like twice a month otherwise mine stink because of the poop build up, but I have like 2-300. 8D
I don't have much experience with live rats (got plenty in the freezer XD) but if you're looking to keep something in a 10 gal I'd suggest sticking with something smaller. :3 (I also have a feeling if you take anything other than a dog outside most people will think you are crazy anyway XD)

now i really wish i had internet in my house, I can't walk into a library with "specimens" lol
the ones around here seem to only have a slight musky scent which is not offensive to my nose, then again skunk spray doesnt bother me either, as long as its not on me, then it affects my social skill lol
as for the rat thing, yeah i intend to get at least a 20 gal before getting a rat, and preferably a female as the males have MASSIVE balls , which just looks nasty lol
oh, thanks for the wordy reply btw, its nice to get a reply as big as my own once in a while, and even nicer when it includes delicious information for my brain to chew on :D
