and 'portal' is doing a very good job of making my gut swirl around .. (finally got my brother to let me borrow the orange box... cos all i wanted to play in it was portal...) im the 'oddball/unique' and racing (need my octane fix) game fan (echochrome is a -real- brain bender give the demo a download if you havent)... FPSs 'newness' ran out with quake 1 for me...
then theres all the bluray, divx, mpeg (1/2/3/4), and aac fun...
and ps2/ps1 retro fun to be had as well...
and of course i can install linux on it too
a fun, and granted expensive, toy... but the only limit ive run into is the amount of usb ports (controller... original eye toy... cell phone... keyboard... hmm... wheres the mouse go? )

actually i was thinking of saving my monies and getting a bluetooth keyboard with trackpad built in... one thats designed for the ps3 so it has the symbol buttons on it and can turn the ps3 on... (the ACPI power button on the generic cheapie... really cheapie... usb keyboard i have doesnt do anything to the ps3... that and it has the dreaded windows keys on it... so it doesnt really blend well with the ps3)
halflife 2 -does- seem cool (i kinda like 'dog') but underneath it seems just like another 'quake'.... the 'shoot the bad things in dark areas with many different weapons' kinda game...
then theres 'team fortress 2' which gave me many LMAOs watching the trailers for it (i cant decide between 'heavy' or 'pyro') but i dont have broadband needed to play it...

ive seen so much 'blue' in my life that - that particular machine is the -only- one i have that runs windows.... ....and after extended support for win2k ends next year not even it will be... i will has a windows free computing environment... (windows apps can be run in the 'wine' compatibility layer so if theres a toy i still wanna play with i still can)
but can you run it on a 386DX?
when i say 'seeing blue' ive been seeing it since win95 (when 95 was still new).... never saw win 3.1 do it... it just always dropped back to dos when it crashed... and fat32 (used in 95OSR2 98 and Me.. tho i never used Me..) doesnt stand up too well to BSODs (the registry in win95 esp... i installed win95 on an old system not to long ago... and a BSOD took half the system registry with it... i wasnt surprised... as its just par for windows course... nothing wrong with the hardware at all... that old 486 runs linux just fine...)
after a few (~18) years of it... it just.... wears one rather thin... and with linux getting better as time goes on... windows is getting chucked out the door....

I use mac and Linux... I'd say Linux>=Mac>Windows
Mac and Linux each have their advantages.
Windows only has the advantage that most games are made for DirextX, and that tends to have a performance hit when WINE has to convert that to OpenGL. Most the games I play either have a native port or run fine under WINE, so this advantage is null for me.

i doubt XP or new hardware would solve my problem... since... well.. it seems even the new hardware doent escape the BSOD....
