When I first saw "Fantastic Mr. Fox" in theaters in 2009, I didn't think much of it. It was just another furry movie that I wasn't all impressed by.
What a freaking idiot I was.
I woke up the next day and suddenly started quoting the movie. The more I looked back, the greater I realized the movie was. Even today, I keep looking back to what I now consider Wes Anderson's animated masterpiece and it just continues to increase in quality. It endlessly provides me with inspiration and thankfulness that this fandom exists and has such incredible contributions to keep the fuel going.
If you haven't seen "Fantastic Mr. Fox", take my word for it and PLEASE do!
I have since been amassing merchandise from the film, and I imagine I will continue to do so in the future.
Now, as for what we've got here, going in chronological order...
Shortly after it was released, I picked up the normal DVD copy of the film, which you can see on the far right. I'm very pleased by the cover and disc art, not to mention the quoted reviews on it that give the film the level of praise it truly deserves. Along with the widescreen version of the film itself, the DVD includes a few bonus features such as "From Script to Screen", "Still Life (Puppet Animation)", and "A Beginner's Guide to Whack-Bat" (a cricket-like game from the film).
As I have since obtained a more advanced copy of the film, I will be giving this DVD copy to a friend of mine to keep, as he has recently watched and fallen in love with the movie too.
With the advancements of technology, I was beginning to feel like I needed this great film in Bluray form. In September of this past year, I came across a special edition Bluray combo pack, which you see in pieces centered to the left of this picture. While normally pretty expensive, it was marked down to about $22 at the time, so of course I HAD to pick it up!
It is a special 3-disc (1 Bluray, 2 DVDs) edition from a series called The Criterion Collection, which I personally had never heard of before. As the back of the box explains, "The Criterion Collection is dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions of the highest quality, with supplemental features that enhance the appreciation of the art of film." Wow. It sure is an awesome feeling to have your opinion of something justified like that. Wes Anderson, the director of "Fantastic Mr. Fox", apparently has 7 total films with Criterion Collection editions, and this is one of them. And, according to a reliable source, "Fantastic Mr. Fox" is the ONLY animated film to ever be released in this collection. That's quite an honor!
I'm not sure how well you can see, but the actual front cover of the collection release is rather interesting. It depicts Mr. Fox, his family, and a few other characters from the film dressed in Shakespearean or Colonial style clothing taking part in a toast before digging into a large feast. The clothing they wear here never comes up in the film, so it's a fancy and creative touch to choose this for the main cover. The entire backing for this collection pays a lot more homage to the rest of the film in a really creative way. For example, the inner cover (standing up in center-back) is adorned with Mrs. Fox's portrait of the area they live in, which plays a part in the film. The inside of that same cover sports the wallpaper found within their tree home, and the discs depict high-quality concept art of the interior and exterior of the home. See that booklet there on the left? That sports the tree Mr. Fox stands under at the beginning of the film, in color on the front and sketched on the back. What's within the book itself, though, is probably the coolest part of this entire collection. Held within is a bunch of stills and sketches done during the movie-making process, such as WIPs of Mr. Fox's character model, a freeze-frame of the apple juice flood scene, character guides and concept art, and so much more! It even includes some articles that delve deeper into the movie and the process of making it, and that's not even the best part! You know that "White Cape" comic book that Ash reads in the film? I'VE GOT IT! IT'S IN THERE! How cool is that???
Along with ALL that, the collection comes with WAY too many bonus/supplemental features to mention them all here. A few worth mentioning, though, include galleries and storyboards for the entire film, an audio recording of the book as read by author Roald Dahl, puppet construction and scene setups, actor interviews and voicing footage, and that's not even everything!!! I'd be happy to tell you anything else about this collection that you'd like to know. This has got to be one of the coolest things I've EVER purchased in my entire life.
Almost a month later, I discovered that Fantastic Mr. Fox action figures were a thing! There happens to be 4 of them: Mr. Fox (of course), his son Ash, Kylie, and Rat. Naturally, I had to pick up my favorite character from the film, and honestly one of my favorite furry characters of all time, Mr. Fox's son Ash. Made and released by Funko, Ash stands at about 5.5 inches tall (roughly twice the height of a normal amiibo when put next to each other) and sports his usual attire of pajamas, socks, and cape. As you can see, he comes with a transparent stand (he can't stand on his own) and an interchangeable head, the new one sporting the actual bandit hat he gets near the end of the movie. I would put the new head on him, but it takes an amount of force that I'm not comfortable using on the delicate figure. The current head comes off fairly easily, but the new head just DOES NOT want to go on! So, he's probably gonna have to stay like this, but that's okay. I'm just glad I have him as a collector's item.
So that's the collection so far.
The only other things I would eventually get would be the Mr. Fox Funko figure and the film's soundtrack, which is really unique and delightful. But I'm not sure when I'll get those, so my collection will likely stay like this for a while.
