How to be a succesful furry artist
Step 1) Open for as many commissions as you think you can do. Go on, you're a go-getter! This'll be easy!
Step 2) Take payment upfront for all of them. After all, literally everybody is a thieving art-stealing bastard who will screw you over.
Step 3) Realise halfway through the first sketch that you've set your goal WAY too high for your personal drive/commitment/desire to do shit and panic.
Step 4) Stop replying to any and all notes, and hide any comments or shouts inquiring further.
Step 5) Throw out a dramatic journal with some believable-sounding emotional bullcrap in it with a half-arsed apology for the several-month-long delay on all the commissions you took on.
Step 6) Open for more commissions.
Step 7) Repeat ad infinitum.

This comic resulted from a brief chat with a friend earlier on. I should be studying for my driving theory test but instead, you get this! Enjoy. Also feel free to sling this around the interwebs as you please. <3

Ugh thank you so much for this. Honestly there are some whom I have steer cleared from, and will be steering clear from, when it comes to commissioning due to this mentality. Honestly, I don't feel it is fair I have to wait almost half a year for a drawing because you don't know how to organize yourself.
I mean I understand that sometimes, bad shit happens and it can mess up your whole schedule, but in that case I'd give them a refund and ask them to commission me again another time when I could get it done in a fair time, yknow? Besides which I take payment on delivery anyway (unless the commissioner prefers to pay upfront which some do), so yanno :P I'm kinda driven to work faster to get paid. xD
Pretty much, and most of the time you end up with something that wasn't what you ordered, and they then get pissy with you about it when you confront them about it.
Shame is; the stigma it forms makes people more cautious about commissioning even good artists since even some of those have pulled this crap before

Sadly true. I keep all my art layered and editable for this reason though... and I'll make any (reasonable) adjustments up to and including it being 'finished' by all standards. If I messed up your character's markings, that's on me to fix, surely xD
(Related note; for the love of god, furries, stop getting highlighted and shaded reference sheets. Especially if you have complex and/or soft-edged markings. It just gets confusing.)

I'm wary of anyone I don't know closely who insists on payment upfront. If you're that worried about the commissioner running off without paying, just watermark your progress updates until they pay.. I personally don't take payment until the piece is finished and the commissioner is happy with it. They then get the un-watermarked and HD versions once they've paid, and as far as I'm concerned that's 'secure' enough for me.
Yeah, agreed; that's a good way of doing it. I'm in the position of the right hand fur though. Sent them $90 8 months ago. One of those "Emergency commissions pls help!" then they drop off the face of the earth.
I was shocked when you didn't want payment up front. It was refreshing but it seems like a risk for you.

*shrug* I: $90 is, what, 12 hours pay before tax at minimum wage? It takes me, on average, about 3-4 hours of actual solid work to bring a piece from sketch to finish, not including procrastination, sleep, etc. So I wouldn't feel anything more than a bit cheated if someone did peg off without paying.
However as I said, I watermark everything until payments been made, and I invoice people for the payments so I have proof of what was paid for incase of any later confusion. Worst case, I just have to blacklist someone from getting commissions from me again, I guess. Which I haven't had to do so far, so, yay :D

So what you're saying is "OMG I'VE BEEN REALLY BUSY WITH SCHOOL I DON'T HAVE TIME TO NOTICE EVERY INTRICATE SUBTEXT IN THE WORDS YOU SAY LIKE SERIOUSLY I HAVE MY OWN LIFE TO LIVE STOP PRESSURING ME SO MUCH TO READ ALL YOUR WORDS WITH SUCH ATTENTION I ONLY HAVE SO MUCH ATTENTION TO GIVE SERIOUSLY AAAAHH!"
