I have a deep-seated love for that novel (reading it again right now, in fact!) As a fan of the novel, i thought the movie was hilarious. Not a re-creation of the book, but "I see what you did there".
Plus the bugs were so pretty! Expecially the shiny green flying bugs. Squeeeeee!
I haven't read it in decades, and felt the movie was a stand-alone cartoon with little more than the title in common. But really like the movie as a turn-off-your-brain action cartoon. Saw one of the bugs on display at Worldcon way back when, wow. I felt that they missed an important bit by not trying to make the other specialty bugs match the architecture of the fighters.
I still have the "cast and crew" T shirt they gave us for being extras during filming at the pyramid at Long Beach university.
This was for the "Jumpball" game sequence...which is definitely NOT in the book....
They recruited me at Worldcon, as I live in the area. However, they were so short of people to fill the stands with warm bodies that they had to put adds in the local Long Beach newspaper to get more.
I actually got to chat with Casper Van Dien during breaks in filming, because some fannish ladies I was sitting with had made friends with him a few days before.
So every time they got done with a shot, he trotted over and chatted with us for a few minutes.
He showed us his Casper the friendly ghost tattoo, as well.
The set security for the costumes was awful...I could have snuck inside the tented off area and made off with a full uniform if I'd felt like it.
Too bad I'm an honest man.
Still have a hard time understanding why they had full uniforms on site when they weren't filming anything that I ever saw that would actually need them.
They actually had some of the body armor and a helmet on top of a box that I could see from outside the costume storage area...And they definitely weren't filming any action scenes with bugs!
