Shouldn't be the case of octopuses and cuttlefises - the first ones because of their very colorful and complex mimetism that cannot be explained by just interpretation of shades of grey, and the second because of their highly-evolved corporal communication system involving many different colours !!
Most people tend to fear things that live in the "uncanny valley", so it's just natural for many to be afraid of a giant creature like that. It really makes me wonder how we'll treat real alien life when we run into it. Are we really so bad-off that we have to base all of our impressions on looks?
Good detailing on the giant creature.
But for some reason I get no sense of impending doom...at least not for the two microized humans presented.
The man is facing the giant warrior, esp his chest. Usually fear would be portrayed by having the chest turned away, and his prop arm would be stretched out further, to indicate a retreat towards (in this case) picture-right. Instead he's clutching his child to him with his chin bowed towards it: a consolation pose, not one usually associated with fleeing.
And for me, the giant seems to be looking past the tattered pair and *out*, towards the Fourth Wall, as if on guard point or passing while on patrol.

Very interesting analyze - I've got an objection to that though, the giant may have come so smoothly the humans didn't notice him, and the fact he was just passing by then suddenly perceived them can explain their respective positions. Anyway, as I said a little higher on another comment, it isn't for me either a scene of impending doom, and I am quite glad you see it that way too instead of following your "instinct" :3
