Carmen had a great thing going for her. She was the most popular girl in her school, had lots of friends, good grades, lots of stuff, and even a scholarship to one of the best colleges in the country. But that all changed when she was kidnapped by a group of strange men, and injected with serum. Her body quickly grew fur and a tail, while her ears became large and round, and her feet cracked and bent into hands. Her life went from great to awful in one day. She was eventually rescued from her captors by the local heroes, but unable to face her family and friends as the freak she had become, she had no where to go. She instead joined the heroes in hopes of stopping what happened to her to happen to other people, but she couldn't help complain and moan about the life she once had, and how easily it had escaped her...

The story just feels like an "Oh-she-was-hated-after-transformation-and-now-she's-a-secret-edgy-emo-now!" Kind of thing, you get me? She looks just the same as she did while she was a human as a mutant, but with more fur, foot-hands and a tail, sure, she'd get some teasing from people once or twice, but I think she'd integrate well into society despite her inability to run. The story has to be changed to accomodate her scorn better other than just "Oh! Plain Racism!" If I was given the opportunity to change it, I would turn her into someone to be hated/feared for a reason, I would have made her really damn aggressive to the point of violent outbursts at the slightest hint of a threat from both the agony brought upon her by both her tormenters, and that her instincts were MUCH more primal, causing her to assault everyone around her to the point of being apprehended by Police. Her needing of a rehabilitation program to help her hone herself. Even when she got out, people did not forget, they veered away from her because of the sins she committed whilst she was crazy. The local superheroes offered her a chance to redeem herself, and thus she accepted their offer. Anything other than being treated like a monster. And also the same reason that she joined in your story. This is a basic summary of how I would have patched her story, if you disagree, feel free to voice your opinion.
