I was under the impression until now that they had a rough relationship at school because Cinder had been a dick to him because he's a bully to everyone... as opposed to that they had once been closer to each other and all that. Early pages suggest (uh, as far as I remember them anyway) they don't even know each other other than from random encounters at school.
Both are true. They went from friends, to almost lovers, to enemies, and now back to tentative friends with lots of unspoken tension? XP I do like a redemption arc myself but I think if I'd gone that route, I would have had to start the comic earlier when the bullying was actually happening :P
