my headcanon is not plausible so it's probs gonna get some hate, but i like it so much i don't care ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
so any kind of confinement/bondage triggers nick's trauma and makes him go savage for a while. nick and judy have been working at zpd for a few years and this has happened a bunch of times. in the beginning it freaked the other cops out, but when they realized judy is pretty good at handling it, they relaxed a bit about it. bogo especially was pretty iffy about the whole thing at first, but once nick became like part of the precinct family, bogo decided to turn a blind eye to it. they have a tendency to overlook certain misbehavior and mistakes from really good cops, and when officers have a skirmish, everyone prefer they hash it out instead of getting the higher-ups involved and possibly leading to someone being suspended or fired.

This looks a bit like a seizure in that it's a sudden attack and Nick has to be immobilized for his (and for others') safety. The main difference is that people who have epileptic fit are only a danger to themselves and not to others.
Anyway... I feel sorry for Nick here. Even after all these years he still feels the effects of that one event. :(

I knew it the moment I saw it... PTSD. But I have to disagree with your theory. As a former felon Nick has probably been cuffed a fair share of times and I'm pretty sure hes good at picking locks and opening cuffs to break free. I doubt he would have graduated if he displayed that behavior in the academy.
Still. I'd buy this for a dollar!
