A rather tasty snack from our friendly neighborhood
!Open For Critique / Constructive Criticism******************************Wuff is out in CA, doing business and visiting friends. Vrghr arrived a couple days early for the business part, and we used the time to do a weekend Movie Night in a friend's garage that had been converted to a big-screen movie setting.
Now, you've GOT to have "movie snacks" to go with the show, and since wuff was involved, ordinary popcorn and soft drinks wasn't going to be NEARLY good enough! *grins*
Got to do salty, savory, cheesy and sweet, as a minimum.
"Popcorn" starred Bacon-Popped Popcorn. (popped in bacon fat instead of coconut oil, and seasoned with sea salt and a touch of Cayenne).
"Cheesy" was satisfied by "Molecular" nachos, made by adding a bit of Sodium Citrate to a couple cups of a local dark micro-brew, and mixing that with some home-made cold-smoked Cheddar Jack cheese. Then adding all kinds of YUM ingredients to that rich, creamy cheese sauce. That was paired with a Seafood Nachos dip, with cold-smoked salmon, salad shrimps, cream cheese, chopped green olives, dill, and other seasonings.
The Savory went to small-batch crafted Bratwurst and Polish Sausage from a local sausage maker and gourmet meats place. Boiled in a local micro-brew ale, then broiled and served in fresh Pretzel rolls, with home-made roasted-smoked garlic and herb Mayo, curry ketchup, and bacon strips.
And sweet is what you see here: Vrghr's "Puppy Chow". This is a severely addictive mixture, and super easy to craft, but so big on flavor it's hard to believe it was so simple to make.
The original recipe sticks with Corn Chex type cereal, but wuff added salty pretzel sticks and mini marshmallows for variety and textures.
Give this a try! You're going to love the results!
Ingredients:
1 box corn chex-type cereal (unsweetened)
1/2 - 2/3 bag small pretzel sticks
1/2 bag mini-Marshmallows
For the sauce:
1 bag (16 oz) Ghiradelli semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 C Creamy Peanut Butter
1 stick (1/2 C) Unsalted butter
1 lb Powdered sugar
Special tool: Large, clean, sturdy paper grocery bag.
Directions:
Melt the butter in a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat
Add the peanut butter and stir until fully dissolved
Add the chocolate chips and stir until fully melted. Allow to heat until steaming
In a very large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients (cereal, marshmallows, pretzels) except the sugar.
Pour the molten peanut butter-chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients, and stir until everything is coated
Add half of the powdered sugar to the paper bag. Pour the coated mixture into the bag. Add the rest of the sugar on top.
Close up the bag and, supporting the bottom with one hand, vigorously shake the bag until all the individual bits are separated and coated by the sugar (keeps them from clumping together).
Refrigerate for about an hour to solidify the coating a bit
DEVOUR
NOTE: You can adjust the dry ingredients to suit your own tastes. Add nuts, dried fruits, change the cereal type to rice or wheat, etc. This is very versatile, but SOOOOO good! And so very addictive!! Try it - you'll like it!
