Uhm, to clarify, the character is a herbivore. The large canines are not for killing prey. ;) I presume they are like Chinese Water Deer, which also sport massive sabre-like tusks: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_deer#Tusks

In short, unless I grossly misunderstand your comment, YOU are the one confused. Not all "fangs" belong to meat-eaters. Moreover, this is a species someone created, so if they wanted to make meat-eating equines, that's just fine. After all, the largest LAND CARNIVORE OF ALL TIME, the Andrewsarchus, was a HOOVED PREDATOR!!!
Don't believe me? Here! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrewsarchus
In case you are lazy, I shall quote (and bold the parts I want to emphasize): "Andrewsarchus mongoliensis (pronounced ANN-drew-SARK-us), (Andrews + Greek ἀρχός, "ruler"), was a basal, heavily-built, wolf-like, hoofed mammal that lived during the Eocene epoch, roughly between 45 and 36 million years ago. It walked on four short legs and had a long body, a long tail, and feet with hoofed toes. It had a long snout with large, sharp teeth and flat cheek teeth that may have been used to crush bones."
Do your research before griping about people being "confused," okay?

Dude, I wasn't all that serious about it. As far as I'm concerned, people can design their characters however they want.
Also, I didn't call the character's player confused, but was referring to the general confusion resulting from fictional settings with sapient carnivores and herbivores living side by side.

A tusked equine, suggesting a carnivorous diet, possibly even involving other equines, would make the issue even more awkward.
And I knew about Andrewsarchus - I own 'Walking with Beasts', too!
(By the way: Andrewsarchus wasn't the largest land predator of all time - It was the largest mammalian land predator of all time. The largest land predator of all time (at least to our knowledge) was Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus, )
