“Our exile was a trying time. Still getting used to our change in form and in a land we knew nothing about, demonkind turned to the figurehead of this little band of rebels to organize us.
Great-Father Lucifer had once been Wash’s most trusted advisor, able to temper that egotist’s power and fury into more productive means. Yet even Lucifer tired of cleaning up his messes, acting upon the beck and call of someone too proud to admit their mistakes.
Anticipating some sort of wrath against us, Lucifer quickly set a group to begin the construction of some basic defensive lines and muster anyone willing to fight in our defense. This was the beginnings of the Dominion of Torment, allegedly so named due to the physical pain the transformation into a demon was causing. The desire for some sort of retribution was perhaps not the best choice, yet it seems to have stuck. Even today, there is the odd petition to change the name to the Dominion of Defiance but that’s a little tangential.
While soldiers and laborers were hard at work making a home in the Torment lands, scouts had been sent in search of any place slightly more hospitable to us. Imps took to the air, learning of the formidable mountains and woodlands that lay ahead. Yet there was some hope. A great plains lay in the south-east, with signs of fertility in the flowering meadows. Loaded with supplies and an armed escort, these settlers were instructed to make what they could of the land there. An agricultural society would be formed there to fill the bellies of the hungry and enrich the soul with song and culture. We would make this land feel like home in what was the founding of the Dominion of Indulgence.
The last portion of the land to be divvied up seemed ideal for coastal settlement. A vast forest lay next to a series of small islands and coves. The description of the scouts seemed to interest the more scholarly of the exiles, who immediately began preparations for their own settlements. Lucifer decreed that this would be the Dominion of Doubt, where all could learn what they had been forbidden to. Where no one would forbid them from expressing their thoughts as long as they were not to seek harm on another. Knowledge was to be tempered in wisdom.
While the three Dominions formed the foundation to what would flourish into our society, other groups either by circumstance or choice formed their own settlements and cultures. While not an exhaustive list, I shall outline a few for posterity.
Many Mountain-Folk Isolated themselves early on, their great pain in transformation from Archangels leaving them with need for space. The higher altitudes seem to ease their suffering, what would be a bitter chill for others was but a soothing breeze to them. This isolation led to the forming of the mountain clans, such as the River’s Path and the Ashbrow.
Imps too formed their own small groups. While not as isolated as the mountain clans, Imp towns were often formed near volcanic vents or magma flows, high up in spots where others found difficult to reach. This attitude changed over time but the love of extreme heat never left them.
The Wild-Mages split off from the Dominion of Doubt to live a nomadic lifestyle tending to the great, imposing trees. Their attitudes range from noble warden of the woodlands to vicious bastard emerging from the woodlands.. Not a group I’ve had the best impression of but they swear fealty to the Dominion of Doubt and their leadership.
There are a few very small communities beyond this but if I listed them all, my journal would be prattling on about every roadside tavern in the land. Or perhaps I’d be giving away one Silencer secret too many…”
