For as long as I can remember, the word 'mercenary' has always been dirty. Up there with 'hitman' 'assassin' 'thief', and barely better than 'pirate' or 'bandit'. In the eyes of the people, the grey market was less grey and more black.
Not that I could blame them. I did kill people in the course of work, and I did have a few innocents caught in the crossfire on multiple occasions. But still, I thought myself better than just a hired killer. After all, I never accepted hit jobs anyways. Too much trouble, too much potential hell I could raise. It annoyed me, really. To walk everywhere and know that everybody saw me as a killer for hire. I thought that if I could take the time to talk to someone, show them what grey work was really like, I could change their mind.
Of course, that was impossible. Even with the world's most eloquent silver tongue, I couldn't win over every heart and mind in the world. But the more I thought about it, I realized I could at least try something. Try to, if nothing else, give at least a little bit of good PR to every mercenary.
The idea itself was simple, and not something I came up with myself. I remember looking back at the evolution of PMCs, how they once handled the kind of jobs we did, before becoming the military security they were. Organization and structure were two words I could've used to describe them, but not mercenaries. After all, our group was considered large when it had five members.
Why couldn't there be a larger mercenary organization? Why did everybody have to constantly lone-wolf? I kept mulling it over, and came up with only a handful of answers. Before I knew it, I started to lay down foundations and groundwork.
It wouldn't be easy, I knew, trying to establish a mercenary organization. Getting people to trust in it, even clients, would be a real pain in the ass. But I knew, believed, that I had a chance to make not just a name for myself, but for everyone that would join us. And I trusted that someway and somehow, I could make it positive. We would be loyal, dedicated, and brothers and sisters to one another, giving each other protection when some of us had never had it before.
We would be The Pride, and provide unwavering loyalty to our clients, at a price.
