So how short is short? And does it matter if it's entirely paid upfront?

Just note me what you're thinking. Keeping in mind I will write at a starting price of $10 per 1k words. I would normally say within 10k words but honestly if the payment is significant enough I am willing to be somewhat flexible. Payment upfront is significantly important in this case but as long as the time between work and pay is reasonable I'm also willing to be somewhat flexible. You can see my rough time limit here but it could possibly be shorter considering who I'm referring to.

Also keep in mind time is my enemy at the moment, expediency is good, simpler the better.
