Well, if the depiction of the magazines irks you so, you could simply mount some mags on a table with some putty, to get a better understanding of how to depict them on paper as a drawing.
You could even ask someone to wear the clothes and gear, then take a HD photo of them so you know how to draw and paint someone in such a manner. And then there's the use of action figures, particularly G.I Joe in this context.
