This recently appeared online, much to my surprise. The reviewer on the Amazing Stories Website "Clubhouse" column decided to write about a "typical" fanzine from 1976, and used one of my ancient illustrations as an example from the zine. I have the original art, of course, but never got around to scanning it. So I swiped the file from Amazing Stories. Seemed only fair. It was scanned from the 1976 fanzine, however, which was printed on sand-coloured paper, I was able to drop most of the background out by converting to grey, but you can still see the texture of the cheap fibrous paper it was printed on.
At that, the art was published still earlier, in a special issue that was done for the writer Joe Haldeman's birthday, about a year earlier. I did the illo for a piece in *that* zine for an article about a shark that had gotten inebriated. I think only about 50 copies of the zine were ever produced! That was why I lent the art to another fanzine as soon as I could. It was just odd seeing it turn up once more, about 40 years later...
I was experimenting with stipling for a couple of years around '75 and '76. I gave it up as too much trouble and not looking the way I wanted the art to.
