There are other scientists such as Dr. Jessica Merwell around the world who are looking into LOST, collecting samples and studying them to try and understand the virus better. But great care must be handled when working with it, due to how horrifically contagious it appears to be, requiring only mere skin contact for it to infect.
It is quite clear that these two didn't handle it carefully. These researchers have become that which they sought to study, and shall now be the subject of research for their - hopefully - more capable comrades.
Just a random thing I drew one day, before I actually got into working with LOST. The sort of thing I would have drawn back in high school: people finding themselves merged and transformed for some odd reason. That reason being none other than to tickle the fancy of the one bringing such horror upon them. ;D
