After Max's adventures in Hoenn were complete, he wasn't satisfied and decided to venture out further in the Pokemon regions and decided to head to where Pokemon originated from and where most Pokemon Trainers started...Kanto. It was there Max found his good friend Doggett who appeared to have a good few Pokemon of his own. So in order to train their Pokemon more further, Doggett challenged Max to a battle.
