This decorative little deer is literally right around the corner from my house, about 30 feet from my front door.
My hometown of Groningen is actually seriously old, having been a major city for at least 1800 years. As such you can find bits and pieces of ancient architecture scattered around the city if you know where to look, and this is a great example: the idea of using specific animals to advertise certain buildings or services goes back to the tail-end of the Dutch Golden Age (which roughly encompassed the 17th century) and deer ended being the animal of choice for pharmacies and apothecaries - hence the "apotheek" engraving.
But yeah: I normally reside along ye olde Turfsingel, which is but one of the many ancient canals running throughout the city. The reason it's called "Turfsingel" is because this particular patch of water was the go-to spot for ships to unload their peat (or 'turf') which was the city's main fuel source for several centuries.
Hah! Made you learn history!
This picture and your soul belong to me.
