Well, its true I prefer realism. I find the need to use bright colors kind of ridiculous, because there is a bit of natural variation that you can work with to get an interesting character. That's not to say you can't use unnatural colors, it just seems odd and unnecessary, and a little attention grabby. And some people don't understand color theory very well, do it just to catch people's attention, and the colors they choose just do not go well together, and can be waaaaay to flamboyant and can hurt the eyes. This green was hard to stare at when coloring, with my computer's brightness all the way up. That said, I've seen some characters with some very cool design that use some bright neon colors. But the use it as a small accent to go with a theme, not just in the common spots that a lot of furries seem to choose.
