I had the opportunity to do some snorkling when I lived in the Florida Keys. A friend and I took his boat about 4 miles out. The water there is very shallow and takes a long, long time to get deep. We dove in about 60 feet just looking around. He mentioned that "the shelf" is just a little further out. At the 6 mile out point, it was like the floor was just gone. It truely was the contenental shelf. It looked like the edge of the world. We went out a few more hundred yards and stopped. We threw the anchor over just to slow the boat's drift. The anchor was not about to reach the bottom. We jumped over the side just to experience what that was like. It was very intimitating. Above us was the shimmering silver of the surface and our boat. Below us...oh... below us was nothing. I just looked and stared at the anchor line that was just a straight line, straight down into a blue black, indigo emptyness. There was nothing, nothing .. not even a fish. It was like being suspending in some crazy blue jello that reach into infinity. I was just hanging in the water between the light above and the infinte darkness below. Just staring at my feet, looking at the color of the water below me fade into darkness and thinking there is nothing there for thousands of feet. It was an experience that , as you may have gathered by now... that I will never forget.
