This is the current design for Link I'm working with to the Link's Awakening project where Link is a rabbit. The mod is a fan made sequel to the fan made Link to the Past mod by Ryusuta where Link spends the entire game in the rabbit form he normally is only in when visiting the Dark World without a moon pearl.
While Link is on the island where the game takes place, there is an art style shift within the game to something very chibi-esque. It's not entirely noticeable in the original game, but the GBC version makes it very clear with the pictobox mouse guy. I'm not entirely sure if there's any cutscenes to draw like this in the original game. When I played it I was playing the GBC version. It's nice to have just in case though.
For the shipwreck version of Link, I decided to give him a very messy look. His fur is all unkempt and messy and his clothes have seen better days. I figure if Link has been on a ship for who knows how long, personal hygiene probably wouldn't be a big priority. And when the game starts with Link's ship caught in a brutal storm that ends up sending him splashing into the ocean and waking up on an island, he would probably be in even worse shape. During this cutscene the art style for Link is significantly different from that seen in the rest of the game, so I removed a bit of the chibi-ness. I only did his waist up because that's all that's visible in the cutscenes. I dunno, maybe it's like the MM Link is Dead theory and he was actually cut in half during the storm and is merely hallucinating the game in his final moments. (No, no he wasn't. I'm just being a butt)
For both designs I tried to follow the sprite work Joat has done for the game. It's really open to interpretation because the sprites are so small, but I think I more or less got the look down. The biggest noticeable change from Link's sprite from Ryusuta's mod to here is that Link has an undershirt now. But that was simply an element that wasn't changed from the vanilla Link's Awakening. Honestly I think I prefer him wearing a shirt underneath.
Anyways, this is just a concept. If any changes need to be made for any reason, whether its due to dissatisfaction with the look or a technical reason within the game's cutscenes that limit what Link can look like (though I think this design will keep that from happening), then things will change accordingly.

Both look quite well, and I do complement thee on thy work. While the shipwreck version looks more scuffed up than the original, I do not think that is a bad idea. From what I can see, in the first part of the ending cutscene, Link's sleeve looks frayed at the end, and it does make sense for a shipwreck to cause some damage to clothing. As well, with the rain, the air-drying, all the wind, and such, I cannot exactly expect one's fur to look pristine. *chuckles* Also, Link is shown, even if not very closely, in full-body in the ending cutscene (well, okay, his feet are hidden by the water, but still).
As for the chibi Link, that is QUITE adorable and fits quite well. Sadly, the undershirt cannot remain, due to technical reasons. Here is an image of one of the photo cutscenes in the original game. Note that Link's tunic is more in line, there, with his sprite look, with a long-sleeved green tunic instead of any undershirt. I suspect that a major part of the reason for this is to fit Link into a four-color palette (including transparency, of course). Because of this, there is no real room for an orange undershirt.

Thanks! And I totally forgot about that last moment at the end where he's sitting down. I stand corrected =P
The undershirt is one of the biggest inconsistencies in the game. I can understand why they did it, two colors, an outline, and transparency are not a lot to work with. For the cutscenes I might just have the undershirt be the same color as the tunic - sort of like the overworld sprite does. I'm not sure I can get away with editing the sleeve in the cutscene to not be orange. I might, but I'm not entirely sure.
I noticed some palette issues when working on the intro cutscene, and was scratching my head trying to figure out what was happening. I then dug through the game files in the emulator and discovered that the intro, outro, and non-animated photography cutscenes are actually maps with a couple tiles they change here and there when they need to animate Link. There's a level editor for Link's Awakening out there that's pretty solid, but I don't think it includes the cutscene and photography maps. Maybe I can mess with the coding to include them though. Either way, editing these things are going to be a lot of work.
