OK ok, I know its not furry, or porn but its still costume making isnt it? :3
So I been keeping a little bit of a secret from you guys.
Over the past month me and my best friend (14 years I've known him now) have gotten together and bought a 3d printer together its called a Cocoon Create 3D Printer (http://www.cocooncreate.com.au/), its essentially a WanHao Duplicator i3 printer re branded and with some minor changes done to it.
ANYWAY! We got into a little project and decided to go printed ourselves one of our favorite iron man masks, this mask has gotten so much attention among friends family and extended mutual friends and family that we have a few commissions lined up already o_o. One being a "Star Wars Jedi Armour", some of other items of different variance.
Specifics:
Now the Iron man helmet itself has all manual hinges no servo's or mechanical hinges. The mask simply holds upwards on a custom arm and hinge system i created and the same with the mid helmet. The mask splits open in the middle (between your ears) to allow you to open it to slip your head in underneath.
The helmet has since been padded with foam for comfort of wear and the PLA its printed from is very durable.
We are planning to get LED lights installed in under the eyes for the iron man Lens "glow" effect but if we cant have it done this week before Supanova Convention (pop culture convention) then we will just make do with the mask as is.
Mistakes Made:
1. We didnt put an initial plain coat of simple red before applying the Anodized red ontop, so you can see some paint spotting of the base coat underneath through the Anodized red.
2. We did set the hinge on the top mis piece correctly so the helmet sits off alignment on a higher seating point (2-3mm extra)
3. The faceplate sits off the top forehead area a bit, more sanding was needed.
NOTE: this was our first ever serious prototype print so for our first time I like to think we did pretty damned well~
Final notes:
We are going to be making some design refinements of our own to make this model work more better for proper use.
1. We are going to be making the middle helmet split null and completely enclose it and instead make a removable rear backing plate so you just unclip it and slide your head in.
2. We will be pre-pilot designing hinge points into the mask model so the hinges sit perfectly.
3. Magnets are used on the sides of the mask and on the faceplate to hold everything in place while wearing the helmet, but the helmet will need some pre-cut sections to allow the magnets to sit comfortably in place without us having to cut it ourselves and possible loose structural integrity.
Once again we learned alot with this mask, and we now have a more thorough understanding of what to do next time we do a helmet (of any kind) along with other bits of cosplay.
What do you guys think?
