Real fur damn hard to draw, requires skill, ton of knowledge and ton of time.. even an approximation may take 6-12 hours to paint for single character. Some artists do that.. but in case of commission.. that costs.
Dark colored fur might be shiny, depends on type and constitution. Actually it is shiny in different way from smooth surfaces, because it reflects only if light falls at sharp angle before reaching onlooker. That's hard to calculate in mind, mostly requires patience and practice.

If you are going for a more matte metal (not chrome), it is all about the secondary highlights and reflected light. You main highlight from the strongest light is still the brightest, but you want to have more reflected light bands essentially. The more of these that occur, the more metallic things appear. The more bands of reflection that appear, and the thinner the falloff is for the highlights, and shinier the metal becomes. Though my particular painting style was adapted for reading metals from a distance (videogames) and is quite different from other people's methods of painting metal.
