1. Lion king (although i do actually love the portrayal of the hyena vs lion world that is irl)
2. Aggressive matriarchy that make them look a bit on the cruel side cause people can be little pansies.

I think that about sums up the misunderstanding creating the bad rep.

Yeah the Lion King really helped propel the whole "Hyenas are evil and all they do is steal other's stuff!" image, which is nowhere near true (Lions are actually commonly stealing from hyenas, and attack hyenas for no reason, even killing them for sport ;>).
And female hyenas do have masculinised genitalia but it's not a pseudo-penis, the species were thought to be hermaphrodites for the longest times XD
