Tommy Lister, (Finnick's english VA) is African American, and I got it in my head that Finnick is as well

Well I have read elsewhere that Lister was cast primarily because of the contrast in his voice with Finnick's character design. If Disney wanted to go with someone more ethnically Latino, while still sounding tough and mean, they could have used Danny Trejo. But Trejo's voice is far too easily recognizable I think, and wouldn't have made for nearly as funny of a contrast as Lister's voice did.

finnick's mom was a drug lord in colombia, and she had to flee and changed her identity and came to zootopia to live under the radar. she met finnick's dad here, but he didn't stick around so she raised him alone. hence the babysitter who finnick ended up spending a lot of time with

Finnick's mom calling a hippo fat makes me ponder how is obesity viewed in Zootopia. Some species are fat by default because it provides warmth/protection/boyuancy/etc and others because they're attuned to going for days on end without eating so calling them such would basically be saying 'hey you're as your kind is meant to be'.

Course then we get folk like Clawhauser who is very much NOT the body type of his species, yet both your comics and the movie itself hint that his bulk is hardly a detriment.

i think beauty ideals mostly align with species (and maybe 5-10% of ppl have taste that "deviates"). like fennec foxes are pretty small and thin so her ideal for a woman is that.
