I use the colors that naturally occur on the animal I am making, so I usually start with white and layer with multiple reddish/brownish/black tones. Starting with white gives me a full range of tones. I guess I don't really understand your question. I mean, if I was making an all-black animal, then I'd definitely use black fur rather than dying white to black...
I guess I am asking about sewn in markings and coloration with airbrushed accents rather than a completely airbrushed head.
When I look at your work, it is stunning. But it being 100% airbrushed makes me hesitate to buy as it is more likely to fade and not last as long as something primarily sewn in.
edit: I realize your head's not airbrushed, I guess I mean "painted". I'm not sure if there's a discernible difference in fading and such between airbrushed vs. handpainted?

You are correct and the answer is that I don't know, honestly
I am using alcohol-based dyes which are intended for use in coloring leather. They do fade over time with exposure to light, especially sunlight, but this process seems to take several years to really become noticeable on leather. I honestly don't know how long it lasts on the acrylic fur material, but I haven't yet been contacted by any of my customers about a need for touch-ups and it's been a few years.
I will likely begin to transition to the type of thing you have described, but first I'd need a larger workspace to accommodate a more diverse fur inventory. I don't believe I'll be able to do that for at least another 6 months.
