Being in the Veneto, I could not miss the opportunity to see Venice. Here you are two photos of the city. In the lower half, you can see the Piazza San Marco. In the upper half, you can see the symbol of the city: a winged lion representing St. Marc. This statue in special intrigues me. Usually, all the representations of the Venice lion depicts him holding something: a book, a sword. This very sculpture (the most impressive, in my opinion) has the front left paw in a way that it seems like it should be holding something, but the guide could not tell me nothing about this, and I can found nothing in the Internet.

That's a good question. You can find a few today, but in the past Venice streets were mostly made of soil and vegetation. Throuhgout the time, these have been progressively replaced by flagstone pavement. That's why you can see plenty of small squares in Venice called "Campo" (field in Italian). In their origines, they were just fields in the middle of the city.
