Sad news today for rock 'n' roll fans: Lux Interior, lead singer of the Cramps, died yesterday in Los Angeles. He was 62.
The Cramps were one of my favorite bands of my misbegotten youth. Their music was best summed up in an early review as "voodoo rockabilly." I was lucky enough to meet Lux and his wife, Ivy "Poison Ivy" Rorsarch, briefly, at the San Diego Comic Con in 1984, where I got this photograph (I'm the grinning fanboy on the left).
But my favorite Cramps story involves my friend Steve "Moldy Ramone" Moldenhauer. The Cramps played at First Avenue in Minneapolis in early 2003. At that time Moldy was stricken with cancer and was wheelchair-bound. His wife, Tanya, arranged to get Steve and her into the club to see the band during their pre-show soundcheck and both Lux and Ivy took time off from rehearsal to personally greet Steve (who died just a few weeks later). It doesn't get much better than that.
Rock on, Lux. Whever you are!
