I hear you. Fur in cycles is very intensive especially going back and forth from rendered view and you never know exactly how it'll turn out until F12. If you're going to adapt this for a models fur however, it's going to be a little different. You'll want to start your particles from the Faces as opposed to the Volume, a Velocity Normal around .05, hair length up to you, and a children threshold high enough to add enough noise to make up for not using volume. If you would like, I can upload and share my findings to play around with.
