This pretty much sums up what happened to me the first time I ventured into world of Ark - Survival evolved.
Singleplayer mode cause I don't have any friends (that play this game) xD
Started out on the north part, cause I thought well, its a starting region right?
WRONG!
I've been chased by Argentavis (huge ass birds), got my house demolished by Rex' and none of my dinos lived for even a day. (I even personally chopped up the remaining health of my Stego after it killed two birds cause the camera was apparently not angles right for harvesting.)
So then I decided, lets build a raft and gtfo. Found a nice place.
Or so I thought. Got gangraped by a group of Titanboas, almost drowned and then got eaten by a Sarco.
Fun times. QQ

Yeah, it might have PVP possiblities, but there isn't much of any going on. The HONORABLE PvP has its own ruleset essentially saying "You cannot raid others without them being open to doing so and online. We do not kill players who are not online to defend themselves properly. That, and like Thea said, we really don't do anything as far as pvp as far as our tribe is concerned.
If you still play, safe areas are south spawns, and there's an island called herbivore island that has no carnivores. Most dinos can't damage stone structures too. I have a base all set up on an official server with many dinos inside. I today just completed the containment area with my behemoth gate.
