This character has two possibilities.
The first is a His Dark Materials original (fan?) character.
Zahir is an explorer. His daemon is a maned wolf named Ao, who is the same sex as he is. Their purpose is to travel the world and write their own encyclopedia, hoping to record much of the nuances of cultures, magics, and daemons around the globe. The journey seems regal but in reality Zahir is not a scholar is he is profoundly poor.
The second possibility takes place in a universe where hybrid animal/creatures exist. These hybrid species have yet to be
named something original. But basically the humans are superior to hybrids and keep hybrids as slaves for a variety of purposes, a popular one being pit fights. Hybrids are feral animals who have the ability to appear mostly human, the only true difference being how their eyes look in their human form.
One day, a rogue hybrid wolf by the name of Trinity(working name) escaped from the fighting pits and started a resistance to free the hybrid slaves from the humans. Zahir was part of a traveling zoo at the time Trinity freed him. Zahir has been kept in a tiny cage in his feral form, not allowed to change out of it, and put on display as an exotic exhibit as one of the last of the Maned Wolves left in the world. This caused him to attribute much distress with his feral form. After being freed by Trinity, he changed to his human form and never returned to the Maned Wolf. He has remained in his human for at least 10 years.
As part of the resistance, he is a scribe and keeps track of everything that happens within the group, but mostly deals with birth rolls. Since he makes a convincing human, he will sometimes go to the pits to spy for the hybrids. Zahir is very secretive of his past and his maned wolf form. Outside the founding members of the resistance, none know what his beast form even is or why he avoids it. Secretly, Zahir wishes he were human and one of the few reasons he sticks with the resistance is because he's not sure he could ever pass as fully human all the time.
The title of the submission is a play on words. 'daemon' is pronounced 'demon'.
