The nerdiest reduction of a response is that I read a dictionary! :O

But, no, more complicated a response than that is that I've always enjoyed accents and dialects and some of my favorite stories, including Stephen King's dark tower series, uses a lot of western 1800's inspired dialect. Shows like Deadwood also help for that and western movies.

But, yes, mostly I got my hands on a literal dictionary of slang and, having the script in mind (I only "dialect up" the scripts on the final draft of the story to save time on parts that may end up removed), I read through the dictionary to find appropriate terms to color the language, this took about 6 hours. I read the scripts aloud (usually in silly slightly over-the-top accents) to make sure things flow and sound natural for the characters in question.

Thank you very much for your compliments though, it takes a ton of work to pull them off and get the right balance for people to still understand it, especially with phonetics, and I appreciate your appreciation of it.
