Alrighty, then! I've been planning to do something like this for a while, and after working on that recent Peryton painting, I really wanted to draw more Perytons! So why not make them my first, official Beast of the Month?!
Beast of the Month: Event
As the above banner indicates, I'm having a Beast of the Month event from April 16th to May 9th! There will be an auction, a design contest, and various Peryton design sales between now and May 9th (my birthday!). I was hesitant to let this event run into next month, but since I'm posting so late in April, I thought I'd give contest folks more than two weeks! I'll be posting the Auction and Contest tomorrow! And I'll update the info here with event news and design listings as I post them!

Beast of the Month: Peryton Lore
Perytons are described as having the head and torso of a stag; the wings and hind-quarters of a bird; and the shadow of a man. They only gain a normal shadow after having killed a single man, and until then they have done so, Perytons cannot be killed by man.
The legend of the Peryton's origin is sparse and somewhat varied. Some say they lived on Atlantis and attack men as revenge for the destruction on their island home. Some say they are born from the spirits of lost travelers or sailors who died at sea. Some accounts tell of Peryton flocks attacking ships at sea. And it was once predicted that the Peryton would lead to the fall of Rome.
My favorite interpretation is that the Peryton is the avenging spirit of one who was wronged. This version has the Peryton invulnerable until they have slain the one who wronged them. This explanation seems to fit nicely with the idea of lost travelers, sailors, etc. who may have been wronged. And given Rome's bloody history, would certainly explain the prophecy that Rome would be destroyed by them.
It also begs the question: What happens to a Peryton if the one they seek vengeance upon is already dead? A question ripe for character ideas and storytelling!

I look forward to it! I should have the info up later tonight. There aren't really any restricting rules aside from species limitations and word-count. Just that the character should be part bird and part deer-esque animal. You can draw your design, write a description and story, or both draw and write. There will be a winner for each of these options. Naturally, drawing and writing for all three entries may increase the chances of winning, but also keep in mind spreading yourself too thin might detract from the strength of your individual entries. I'll say a 1000 word limit, but you don't have to write nearly that much. More important is quality, not quantity. (And also, nothing XXX rated, lol.)
