Made a base to build the head onto and to create the hollow for my own head.
In case you're reading this and interested in tips for creating your own fursuit/mask here's my process so far:

1.) [refer to my 01 photo] research head shape and sketch out for better understanding of translating 2D to 3D
2.) Take a lot of newspaper (or a comparable material that can be bunched up) and form a sphere.
3.) Using a measuring tape, and maybe the help of a friend, measure the general radius and height of your head.
4.) Continue building (or reduce) the sphere until it is as close to your head size as possible.
5.) Referring to your research sketches, start building the shape of your character's head onto your own. Try to keep it as close to your own head-size as possible. Don't add more radius unless character head shape demands more width/height/length, etc. Also don't add ears or thin/delicate appendages yet.
