The lights outside the window flashed by like stars as the bus continued the final leg of its seven hour journey from Bunnyburrows to Zootopia city. It was mostly empty now, most passengers had disembarked at earlier stops. The only ones left were the big movers, those who leaving for the big city, returning to it or visiting those who had gone before them. Every occupied seat had a story, of hope or ambition or need or love.
Two of these travelers occupied a pair of seats next to each other in the back. They'd been there the entire trip. At first they'd caused raised eyebrows, hushed conversations. It was rare to see predator and prey so close, talking away as they had been. But it was late now, the wee hours of the morning and the odd pair had long ago ceased to be interesting to those who remained. They had other things to think about, where to live, how to make rent, how to realize their dreams. Those tired souls sat and thought of the future, of its cares and opportunities, of the road ahead.
Such things did not trouble the fox and bunny, they had both taken such a trip before, seeking to become what they'd always dreamed of, finding it harder than expected and in the end discovering they'd ended up in a very different place then what they'd aimed for, one more challenging and yet more rewarding than they'd thought possible. They had been back to their roots, time and time again, for if you didn't remember where you came from, how could you know where you wanted to go? Such a trip was trivial now, a single step on a longer journey. There had been things enough to think about, to discuss at its start and end; family to meet, introductions to make, pies to gift...
But now there was a brief moment of peace, nothing to do, nothing to say. The world and all its cares were a distant, faded memory as the couple slept together, sharing a dream.
As the night wore on outside, rich, deep and dark, two souls traveled together in their own warm little world.
