I figured that I since have pics posted of JD, I ought to post pictures of the other fursuits I've built and perform in. Strangely enough, each of the suits was primarily built for and successfully debuted at Further Confusion. An interesting coincidence, but each one an idea I was excited about.
Fooey was based on the little avatar that decorated the FC 2008 website right underneath the navigation menu and occasionally on the subpages within. One particular picture was of the little critter scratching his ear with his hind leg, and if anyone knows me, it's something that I can do in costume fairly well! The character was super cute and I thought it'd be a great idea to try throwing him together!
The character is a Foo Dog/Foo Lion (also sometimes known as a Kirin), which are the little statues that you may find in front of many Chinese establishments. They usually come in pairs, and the male one of the two usually has a giant ball with him. The icons are meant to be a symbol of good luck and to ward off evil from entering the building they protect. Not showing in the picture are the (not so) long tusks coming from his mouth, which were meant to instill fear, along with the creature's sharp claws and piercing gaze. This critter seems to have missed the cut altogether in the "scary" arena ;)
This guy was much easier to perform in than the prior year's project (Tux), since the character lent itself much more to a JD-like performance. Heck - he even has the floppy ears, and many considered him to be just JD dipped in red paint. Yes, I did jump in the pool at the end of the convention, and yes, the fursuit is fine - thanks to those people who were charged with the responsibility of making sure I had it back that night! Don't jump in pools, people - not safe, not fun :P
Now without an Asian theme to put him in context, Fooey remains to be a difficult character to bring out, but he has made cameo appearances at charity events and Chinese New Year parties. Without his other half, too, it's tough to encourage him to come out and play. But I'm sure one day he'll find his partner.
