I figured that I since have pics posted of JD, I ought to post pictures of the other fursuits I've built and perform in. Strangely enough, each of the suits was primarily built for and successfully debuted at Further Confusion. An interesting coincidence, but each one an idea I was excited about.
Some anticipated that I was going to build something for FC '09, having built a new suit for the two years prior. Those people would be correct - but everyone was anticipating some kind of critter related to the theme, such as an otter or the islander German shepherd that appeared on the website.
The idea to build Bolt stemmed from a combination of two circumstances: the fact that I have a whole lotta fur laying on my couch in my cozy (read: small) NYC apartment, the other was from Jimmy Wolf whispering in my ear as the movie Bolt was starting something along the lines of "Wouldn't it be great if you made a Bolt costume?" And so the idea was sparked in my head, and I couldn't shake it out until this guy was finished.
At the time, I was VERY busy and taking on a fursuit project was the last thing I should've done. I had started a new job which was just entering its busy season, I was studying for my CPA exams, and I had a few ballroom competitions to train for and perform at. Somehow, however, I found the time to whip this guy out (though I was working on last details up until the time we got picked up for the airport). Also, since I was so busy, I'd locked myself away from the internet practically in order to focus on my studies, so I wasn't aware that AnimeCat was working on a costume as well - but her in progress photos show a lot of promise for the character - I'm sure it'll look great! =)
As anticipated, Bolt was well-received at the convention, and Tux made a reappearance to join him as "Not Mittens" in re-enacting some of the scenes in the movie, including dragging the "creature of evil" around by a blue rope and an epic styrofoam battle.
Bolt was a joy to perform in, though I had to de-JD-ify him since such a bouncy performance didn't match the suit type or the character. By the end, he was much more toned down, but still carried impact for the audience. Also threw off the scent that I'd been the one that made and was performing in it. Jimmy Wolf also got a shot to perform in it during the parade, and though I was plenty busy bouncing around as the pup, I enjoyed watching Jimmy entertain the crowds and enjoy being the character too.
Bolt's next stop will be at FWA (after many people's persuasion), so if you missed him in California, you'll get a second chance down in Atlanta. I hope to be able to get a doppleganger photo with AnimeCat's rendition of the cute canine! =)
