used a photo as reference. I'll start scanning my work if I ever get good. I should probably stop practicing just shading techniques and learn how to actually illustrate things, capture form and such.

I dun think you're giving yourself enough credit here!
Either way, I used to do the same thing back in the day, though my interest was dinosaurs. I wish I still had some of that old work lying around, but alas, it has all gone by the wayside over the years!

Not a problem at all!
But on that point, it isn't as easy as it looks! It would often take me hours to copy the picture of one of my dinosaurs - and that was usually a carefully selected one, and quite often for how easy I thought it might be to draw!
So again, don't sell yourself short. Doing a work of this quality, even if you are copying it from a photo or illustration, isn't really all that easy at all!
