Today I was at the National Museum of the USAF to witness the moving of two presidential transports; President Truman's VC-118 "The Independence", and Eisenhower's VC-121E "Columbine III". This will probably be the last time they will ever be moved in their lifetime as they go to their new hangar.
This is Columbine III.
Columbine III is the successor of Eisenhower's first plane, VC-121A "Columbine II". Columbine III was originally intended to be a Navy R7V-1 transport when it was modified on the assembly line at Lockheed to become the presidential transport, getting square L-1049/C-121C windows instead of the eight round portholes of the Navy R7V-1. She entered service in 1955 and flew for the remainder of Ike's presidency until being retired as the presidential transport in 1961. She then flew VIP missions until being retired and flown to the NMUSAF in 1966 where she was restored back to Eisenhower's transport and put on display ever since.
