If you had played Portal 2, you wouldn't be surprised. It goes down for way more than a few miles, the Portal 1 scenario is just the top layer. (Also, the bottom is freaking scary D8)

You CAN play only the second, but if you wish to undestand everything and enjoy it fully, you SHOULD play both in order, I highly reccomend it. (for instance, you wouldn't get the "OH SHIT NOW I'M FUCKED" feeling when you watch GLaDOS waking up on the 2nd if you don't know what she did to you on the 1st one and such)

Also, I heard you can download 'em both via torrent... (just the co-op mode on the sequel that doesn't work)

If you can afford, it's better - go to the Portal 2 page, I think they have a package of them both with discount or something. I have Portal1 in Steam, but the 2nd... only when I have enough money.

Also, there's MANY fanmade mods/maps for Portal1, it's a must you try them after beating the original. A warning though: they're usually 10x harder than the official.
