Diary of Eren al-Khemi
The world I had known has ended. Several days ago we fought off the assault of the hyenas, the Hyksos how they call themselves. Disgusting creatures, that I have sworn to kill everyone that wanders the sands of our homeland. Their advance reached the city walls of our home, Zawty, and for days we were preparing to face them. We lost about 600 of our brave breatheren who fought fiercely against them. First countings of the dead hyena bodies in the bloody sand let us assume that their losses were in the thousands. But knowing that the city is safe for now does not soothe my aching heart and soul...
Among the fallen are my father, the Nomarch of Zawty, Urn al-Khemi and my younger brother, Iman al-Khemi.
I am writing these lines with great pain in my right half, because I also suffered a deep injury across my shoulder and chest. It was in the middle of the fight, the heat of the battle, the setting sun bathed the desert in its bloody red light while jackals and hyenas were fighting for blood. My battle training probably kept alive that day, but I am not fully sure if I wanted to stay alive, knowing that my father and brother are on their descent to Duat.
While I was on the battlefield, my khopeshs in my hands, slicing myself through the bodies of our enemies, I smelled the scent of musk and fresh blood in my nose. Also the scent of death... Upuaut was watching our us and I am sure he guided me through the battle. After I cut down roughly two dozen of these mulking beasts, I spotted my father. He fought with great vigor and strength, slaying one man after another. But then they surrounded him and I saw how that dirty hyena drove his spear through my father from behind, the bloody tip emerging from his firm chest... I screamed and ran to him, slaying everyone that was in my way. But after I knelt down to check for him, he was already gone. My father did not respond to me and he never said any word to me again. I managed to get the attention of some of our city guards and they arranged to bring his body inside the walls. Preparations for his mummification are on the way.
Distracted by my sorrow and grief, I was not paying full attention to my surroundings and I spotted that other man too late. He tried to chop off my arm, aiming at my shoulder, but I managed to pull away rather so slightly that his blade shattered my shenti and cut all along my chest. The priests say that I will probably keep a scar from it as the cut is pretty deep, but I shall wear it with pride for the rest of my life. Because right after I recovered from the hit, I did not feel any pain and rewarded the hyena with a precise slice of my blades through his head. Soon later I got escorted back into the city after the Hyksos forces then pulled back and retreated.
These days we're safe again. My wife is with my two little boys in their sleeping chamber. We have not explained them what happened that day and that their uncle and grandfather will never return. So we have to prepare them for their future as my eldest son Areku will someday inherit the position of Nomarch from me as I have inherited it now from my father. The official nomination will take a few weeks after the pharaoh got informed, but it is only a matter of protocol. It is now my duty to serve the city and lead it greatness. And to prepare my sons to do this when it is their time to lead.
But I ask myself: Am I prepared?

Wonderful!! Absolutely wonderful!! I'm a big fan of bloody battle scenes, but they rarely have this level of emotion and attention to detail! I'm stunned!! The deep gashes with exposed muscle, the different textures differentiating the dried and fresh blood, the look of pain and fear in their faces, and the severed tongue and teeth makes it all a little tongue-in-cheek (pun unintended) and over the top. Simply put, I love it!!
