Further Confusion was so FUN! Suited for the first time (even though it's just a partial), my first Fur Con, and I finally got to meet the guy who's birthday I share... The exact same day, month AND year. Too neat that we're not only the same age, but that we're both dragons, too.
This was just after the Adult Dragon panel had ended, and I was in line to get one of their shirts. :)
And his costume is amazingly gorgeous. Drooool.
I give you... Scabrous Vermicelli! He keeps talking about retiring the character... Jeez- DON'T!

Good on you, hon! I thought you were talking about the gorgeous Scabrous, though- he's the prettier of the two of us by far! *giggle*
Sticks scare me- too focused on their dwindling bodies to attract a bunch of Shallow Hals that they'll dump as as they get bored... Bleah.

It was stifling in there, and I wore my head through much of it, so yeah, I can understand folks flocking to get OUT, just to cool off. Heh. I kept looking for you after, and I thought I'd seen you, but I'm a short litle critter and most of you folks is taller than weee ol' me. My eyesight isn't the greatest and I totally SUCK at recognizing human faces (toss in a dose of terminal shyness, too). Dragons rawk my sox, especially that lovely Scabrous. I swear, he has to have THE coolest-looking costume!
Isn't he? He was one of the first furs to encourage my suiting efforts and was always a nice fellow to me. He was the one who'd noticed that we shared the same birthday and told me about it- too cool that we're both dragons, too. If he isn't working in Special Effects, he damned well SHOULD be. His work is astounding. He didn't make the armour, though- that was another amazing costumer's work- but he made both the head and his beautiful, whippy tail. I kept staring at that caudal appendage all through the panel. Yum, yum...
Uh there were two at FC, actually! Both were dogs with "Canine Unit" on their uniforms, and they had riot shields, too. The way I told them apart was one dog was darker than the other. I don't have pix of them, but at least one of them shows up in the Fursuit Parade. There was also a guy in Master Chief armour- it was grey, though I think there might have been a blue one wandering around.
Indeed it was, even when I spent most of it with a headache from the danged glue I was using on the masks. Guh- that stuff REEKED. I feel I must mention: Scabrous was made by the fellow wearing him. I had nothing to do with that beautiful piece of work. I unfortunately don't have any pix of KaniS in his mask- he was behind the camera.
Only a little- the only buckram I could find in time for the Con was a fairly tight mesh, but it seemd to work well enough. I think I'll try very carefully clipping single threads out to open the vision a bit more. I made the eye-holes really big, so it wasn't an issue of stuff being in the way, though my ginormous eyebrows fluffed over my eyes a bit.
She's technically a "Western", if by Western you mean a four-legged lizardy-appearing critter with membraneous wings. But, Taan'Rren are a bit different than your average dragon. First off, they're mammals, but lay eggs, and their mammaries are on the belly, just in front of the hind legs. They're small- not more than twelve to twenty feet (at a guess- there were no humans on their world to compare sizes with). Not heavy magic-users, either. Some very small, not-so-shiny abilities like finding stuff or empathy, not much else. They aren't impressive; dainty in build, they don't match for sheer mass or bulk like most dragons seem to pride themselves on. They don't hoard treasure, they're not super-strong or genius level intelligence, either. Mostly, they were just folks. They lived in a tribal society based on packs or clans, did only a little farming (otherwise, it was hunter-gatherer), some small amounts of metal-work, weaving and other crafty arts.
But "Western", yeah, that was the closest description I could find in the tags.

lol wow that's highly detailed! ^.^ I love it! lol well they sound really nice, I don't think I've ever heard of a dragon with mammary glands. I myself have yet to design my character Emillie's dragon form. I've been struggling with it because there are so many things to choose from. I've been partial to Wyverns, but then again I do love all dragons X3
Well, I like a more "realistic" or plausible background for my characters. The over-blown drivel most of the kids put on their characters is simply badly done, self aggrandizing wish-fulfillment. Maybe it's a writer thing, or the kind of thing the ones with less imagination (like me ) do. Heh.
Yeah, I can understand a love for dragons- I've been dragon-crazy since I was a kid...
Yeah, I can understand a love for dragons- I've been dragon-crazy since I was a kid...
lol yeah, i watched a show on discovery about the science of dragons. apparently a group of scientists set out to figure out how a dragon would breath fire and fly if it really existed. it was fascinating! though, I fear I may be one of those people with over active imaginations. My mate asked me why I never draw his characters, before I realized it I responded 'cause they're boring'. What I had meant by that, is that they don't have tails or horns or some animal form of ears. X3
Thanks! I gotta get something happening, really. Will split of course. One thing that's nice is that the cost of living is higher down there. Any sales I get here are pocket change comparatively. Now if I could find a nice gallery in TOKYO to sell to or through! *drool!* :D Good hunting! Oh and I should get you a print of that "Topaz" picture. If that doesnt get em, nothing will.
Hmmm? "Topaz"? I do know of one gallery you might have a chance at: Q 2, in Venice Beach, California. I think they have a website, got check 'em out and see what submission guidelines they have. I dunno if they only show locals, or well-knowns, though, but the place seems unpretentious. They've been nice to me, anyway.
Ah, this must be them...

But I can deal with those pictures now, somewhat, because of the pics I've taken recently.

Yup, that would be the one! I thoguht their logo looked like a "Q", sorry. "G2" makes more sense- it's one of the summits near Everest, if I remember correctly, and some of the photographers in that gallery look like they could have travelled that far to get their images. I've been in the gallery three times, now, for a variety of events, and they really aren't that pretentious (except for the one fundraiser I went to- THAT was pretentious), and the prices for some of the smaller prints are actually pretty reasonable, considering the high tone the gallery tries for (range between $150 to $800- I could actually consider paying the smaller price for a piece of art). Some gorgeous things there, and I see some of the imagery and I think, I have one or two that might work, here. O____O I think there's a few in your gallery that could fit in, too (the crocus in the morning comes to mind). They're in a trendy part of Venice Beach, but they're still pretty down to earth- rather hippyish.
Faved "Topaz", by the way- it's beautiful.

Oh that crocus picture is booo-ring! Nothing special there. On the other hand nothing ventured nothing gained and who knows, if I mention the ultimate goal being a wee bit of an artists collective... Personally I'd send them things like the upcoming sunset reflected in those icy ripples, unique things like that.
Yah, no kidding. Gorgeous work- gotta find out who the genius was that made that beautiful thing. I already know which genius made the mask... OM NOM NOM... And he is a sweetie, too. Turned out that he was one of the Con organizers- did work on the art show. Heh. I only knew him as this neato costumer I shared my hatchday with.
Indeed! His head is made of fibreglass and he smoothed it after the casting, then airbrushed it, from what I could see in my surruptitious nosing over it while trying to figure out how he did it. Me, I think I might have gone for flocked or matte appearance, if possible, to make it less of a shiny blinder of eyes... *grins*
I've been enjoying the stuff on her site, too. Pity some people have been jerks to her about her going up to accept the prize for her Wolf Link- a stupid misunderstanding, there. Her sister was in the Link costume and her hands were unusable because of it's construction, so Beastcub went up to take the prize for her, merely becasue she had paws she could USE. Some folks are idiots...
It would be pretty cool to see your character as a suit.

I was kind of overcome at finally getting to meet my "mysterious twin" from the West Coast! I'd been admiring Scabrous for over a year, now- I'm just grumpy that Youtube took down his awesome video for having copyrighted music in it. Phooey. Now I can't point folks to a good vid of him walking about San Fransisco on Hallowe'en night in the Scabrous costume. You should SEE that tail of his move! Awesome stuff. It really is a funky coincindence that he and I share the exact same birthday and are dragons, to boot! He's also a really nice guy, too.
Yeah, no kidding! But, if he's getting tired of the character, or he's finding he's having to make too many repairs for it to be worth wearing the costume, I can understand if he'd want to retire him (though it looks near brand new, so repairs or damage visible- I think he's got years of wear left in him). Such beautiful work- I fell for him as soon as I got to see him move in the vid he'd posted to Youtube a couple of years ago. Dang site took it down 'cuz he used copyrighted material in it- some music he thought appropriate for the video. He gave credits for the songs and everything, but they yanked it anyway. Jeez- jerks..
Yeah, I guess so... But he's so gorgeous! I remember the first time I saw him at a Celtic Faire up by my parents house. I was blown away. I will be sad when he's not around anymore.
They took down that video? When did this happen D8???
Bleh... i know copyright, but when credit is given... why not?

I have no idea- maybe the band complained, though it's such a limited audience-specific vid that I doubt the bands ever saw it. Youtube is known for covering their figurative butts regarding copyrights... I tried to call it up to show a friend of mine who's into costuming and I discovered it was missing from the line-up. I'd last viewed it sometime in the Autumn of 2008, so it wasn't all that long ago that they removed it.
Technically, as far as I know- if the person isn't making money off the re-showing of the song (it's being used as background music, for crying out loud) and gives full credit to the artists by naming the songs and their creators, he shouldn't have had any problems. It's "fair-use" and non-profit. But, i'm not a lawyer, so I dunno if there's some other glitch in that program where someone could get sued for posting something with their work in it, even if it's just being used as a soundtrack. Personally, I think Youtube are being dix over this one- it's a cute vidoe, with Scabrous cavorting all over San Francisco, chumming it up with the ladies who all seemed to adore him, and these were Muggles on the streets, mind you- imagine all of them clamouring for scaly kisses from that handsome devil!
Heck, I was drooling over the tail-action (not to mention that fabulous mask), it was so beautifully done and completely without any animatronices, too! Just simply a gorgeous piece of skilled costuming that I'd be sorry to see go. And well, I wouldn't kick him out of the lair for eating crackers, either! *leers*

Yeah. I will be sad when Scabrous is no longer on the prowl for lovely ladies. A dark day it will be indeed. 8C
His tail is awesome, I asked him to give me a little run down of it cos I'm making two tails for two different reptilians. So far, one of them is being made by my adviser for class (cos he's a douche bag and trying to take over my project). But, at least I have a back up plan for when his is all kinds of heavy, messed up and would prove to poke thru the foam latex (i know it would cos it's being made out of metal >8I)
Anyways, Scabrous is such a big help and such a sweetheart. I was glad I finally got to meet him in person too! XD

Yeah, he's pretty open about the techniques he used in the making of that tail. Ever see those slinky snake toys made of wood? The ones with a strip of fabric or leather down the centre and the sections of "snake" glued to it so that it wiggles when you move youre hand even slightly? Kind of like that. He did something similar with a bit of fabric running down the centre, with light plastic plates riveted to it for a firm "spine", then put foam- cut into gradiated blocks with their centres hollowed out a little to keep it light and whippy- all along that, then covered it in fabric and painted it. Damn, that man is a skilled worker...
He showed me some nice, clear pix of it when he found out I was designing a suit for Murrah and I'd told him of the slinky snake idea I'd wanted to try for my tail. He said that would work really well, and sent me the images of Scabrous' tail that he'd made a few years before. Nice to know I'm not a complete waste as a costuming engineer! Now, if only I could get enough coin together to actually make the thing!

Yeah. I'm banking on my adviser's tail failing, so I'm going to attempt Scabrous' version on my own. Still trying to gain a little more funding for that though, this stuff is EXPENSIVE, haha. All else fails, poor Millikan will finally have her tail!
If he lived closer, I'd totally be bothering him a ton for help on my project XD
Can't rave enough about that dragon. Haha.

*giggles* Me neither, he's such a pretty, pretty piece of costuming. The cost for making cool things like this can be apain, but man, you get something to be proud of at the end of it, if you've taken the time to do it right. The tail I wore at FC wasn't using Scabrous' idea- I wasn't able to get those materials together in time, but now that I'm settling into my new digs in California with my fiance, I should eventually be able to make something like what I was originally planning.
I hope your tails turn out better than mine did, and that this advisor or yours doesn't completely bork it for you.

Haha, yeah. It's more a matter of money, time and supplies. Said adviser mucked-up the first head casting we did of me... and so I took it in my own hands later and did it my simple and cheap way and it worked out fine. But, that still put me back 50-70 bucks worth of supplies for that messed up head cast. Oh gods, it is awful!
Once I get sculpting though, I have a great time. And I'm very lucky to have a few friends that are in the effects industry to help me out too, so they can tell me what's what and help me along.

Awesome! Me, I have to re-invent the wheel pretty much every time, I just don't seem to learn any other way. I'll snoop around to find info I might be able to use, but, until I actually try it the first time, I have no real idea how it'll turn out, what problems I might run into, etc. For example, the first tail I made, even though there was a curve in the pattern, still came out torpedo-ish and twisted clock-wise. Solution: more, exaggerated curve in the pattern, make doubly certain it's symmetrical and use twill-tape on the seams inside to keep the shape better, especially if the fabric is at all stretchy. Seems like a no-brainer to me now, but at the time, I'd really thought the curve would show in the finished tail.
My dragon head was the same thing: fuck up the prototype so I don't have to do it on the good one. If I use cellu-clay again, I'm getting some of that plastic mesh or aluminum modeler's mesh to make the frame, then put the clay over that. And I'll make the interiors a good bit bigger on the inside, so the shrinking the thing does as it dries won't pose any issues. Carving and carving on the inside of Kani's drove me bats, 'cuz he has to wear his with his glasses or else he can't see. Next time, budget over a month to take in drying time, instead of rushing it by baking it in the oven on low heat like I did with Kani's and my first heads.
As you can imagine from the above, I make a lot of mistakes on my first efforts, and often there's a few on the later models, too. I'm always having to fix something I borked the first time.
