In a season 1 finale of a fan fiction, that takes place within an alternate Pokemon universe I made, Ash & Aureole had finally admitted their feelings.
Before I explain, a lot of fan-favorite characters, including Ash Ketchum, Gary Oak, Misty, Brock, May, Dawn, and Brendan, among others, are actually poke-folk, within this seperate continuity; being a bit more true to the video games, but at the same time, this story would have a lot of interesting details, that the anime would've never explained, but neverless, are kept clean, and nowhere beyond the PG rating.
Also, it's implied, that Ash is supposed to be a Pikachu boy. And as couple, they're supposed to be both like, 16 years old in this paralell world, where it's taking itself on a direction, that is slightly more true, to the video games, itself, but at the same time, still some things are different.

Why the tears, on Aureole? She was worried, about Ash, during his survival, in the middle of an explosion! Aureole (typically shy) had no longer been afraid to admit her feelings, since she was so worried; Ash begin to honestly admit, that he had secretly contained feelings for her, as well! This is when they had fallen in love.

Ash: So, I was wondering; do you need me to let you go?
Aureole: Nope; that's okay; I actually don't mind you holding me, like this; after all, I do love you, Ash, as I admitted it!
Ash: Indeed!
*They soon begin to, after gazing at each other, romantically, start to kiss*
